Phillies Face Payroll Crunch, Must Seek Bargain Upgrades to End Early Playoff Exits

The Philadelphia Phillies are heading into the winter following yet another disappointing conclusion to their MLB Postseason run. The team was eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card Round, marking the third straight year in which Philadelphia made an early exit from the playoffs. Now, the franchise must once again search for ways to improve for the upcoming season.

While there was speculation about the managerial position, the Phillies opted to retain Don Mattingly for another couple of years. The veteran coach has done an admirable job turning the team around, and keeping him in place is a sensible decision. However, the bigger question marks surround the roster and how the front office will reshape it.

There has been chatter about making significant changes, but executing those moves could prove difficult. Philadelphia surely aims to remain a contender, and the window to compete with the current core is still open. Yet, taking the next step forward will require upgrades.

Phillies Need to Find Affordable Help

As things stand, the Phillies' payroll, including luxury tax implications, is projected to be quite high next year. With extensions kicking in and key players entering arbitration, the roster is an expensive one. While the team can afford it and is fielding a playoff-caliber squad, whether they are willing to add significantly more payroll remains uncertain.

Ideally, Philadelphia hopes some of its young talent can contribute in 2027. Aidan Miller is a logical candidate to be on the Opening Day roster, and with Alec Bohm set to become a free agent, Miller fits at third base. While that could solve one need, the Phillies have other areas to address, particularly in the outfield and bullpen.

Given the likelihood of already spending heavily in 2027, landing a top free agent might be unrealistic. However, the team could pursue affordable options to fill their needs. While such bargains occasionally emerge in free agency with players coming off down years or injuries, the trade market appears to be the more probable avenue.

If Philadelphia could shed some salary, they would likely attempt to do so, but many contracts are far from ideal. With a desire to improve, working the trade market might be the best course of action for the Phillies.
