Pelicans Eye Sabonis? New Orleans' Hot Streak Sparks Trade Rumors

After a rocky beginning to the 2026-27 NBA season, the New Orleans Pelicans have turned things around, reeling off four straight victories to bring their record to an even 4-4. First-year head coach Jamahl Mosley seems to have found a successful rotation that maximizes the team's talent, which had previously struggled to coalesce.

With the Pelicans performing above expectations early on, the front office might be motivated to pursue a consolidation trade to strengthen the roster. One name that has surfaced as a potential target is Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis, who is reportedly available on the trade market as the Kings appear headed for another losing season.

NBA analyst Siegel, speaking on the Clutch Scoops show, outlined a possible framework: "The Pelicans, for example, they have the salaries and type of players that the Kings would want where you could give up a Jordan Poole, a $34 million expiring salary. Maybe you can give up a future first-round pick and unload someone else. Maybe it's a three-way or a four-way deal where you can give up Dejounte Murray in that case."

There is ample opportunity for New Orleans to pursue Sabonis or another big man on the market. However, from a basketball standpoint, the fit is questionable. Zion Williamson remains firmly entrenched as the starting power forward, and the Pelicans' primary need is for size and rim protection at the center position.

That need explains why New Orleans opened the season with Yves Missi as the starting center and has since turned to Karlo Matkovic, a floor-spacing shot-blocker, while Missi deals with an injury. Additionally, acquiring Sabonis could hinder the development of Derik Queen, whom the Pelicans traded a valuable first-round pick to select in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Key Analysis

While the Pelicans' improved play might make them buyers, the team could be better served exploring other options. A trade involving Murray, for instance, would allow New Orleans to fully hand the point guard reins to Jeremiah Fears. As the rumor mill churns, the Pelicans must weigh short-term gains against long-term developmental goals.
