Pavin Smith's Diamondbacks Tenure Ends as Outfielder Elects Free Agency

Pavin Smith's long-standing connection to the Arizona Diamondbacks appears to have reached its conclusion. Selected seventh overall in the 2017 MLB Draft, Smith had been a fixture in the organization for ten seasons, shuttling between the minor and major leagues with inconsistent results. On Tuesday, as the 2026-27 offseason commenced and teams began paring down their rosters, a transaction involving Smith surfaced.

According to transaction logs and a Diamondbacks press release detailing a series of roster moves, Smith was outrighted from Arizona's 40-man roster. That designation would have sent him to Triple-A Reno, where he has spent a significant portion of his professional career. Instead, Smith opted to become a minor league free agent, granting him the freedom to negotiate with any interested organization.

While a return to the Diamondbacks remains a possibility, Smith's decision to decline the outright assignment to Reno suggests he may be seeking a fresh start elsewhere. The Reno Aces, for whom Smith has played 175 games, posted a farewell message to him on social media. In 2026 with Reno, he posted a .301/.425/.500 slash line and a .925 OPS over 43 games and 181 plate appearances.

However, Smith's 2026 major league campaign was a struggle, continuing a pattern of inconsistency. By July 8, he had managed just a .141/.236/.192 slash in limited action and was designated for assignment. He remained in the organization and was recalled in September, hitting .290/.333/.548 in a small sample, but his full-season OPS finished at .556.

For his major league career, Smith owns a .242/.325/.398 slash with a .723 OPS. His most productive season came in 2024, when he posted a .895 OPS in 60 games as a platoon bat. He followed that with a .796 OPS over 87 games in 2025, though injuries limited him that year as well. Smith offers a left-handed bat with some power, but his overall numbers have not matched the expectations of a top-10 pick.

Key Analysis

Smith has shown flashes of effectiveness when shielded from left-handed pitching and deployed as a designated hitter, but consistency has eluded him. His departure from the only organization he has known could provide the change of scenery needed to unlock his potential. At 30, Smith remains a viable left-handed option for teams seeking depth, but any career resurgence will likely occur outside of Arizona.
