During ESPN's College GameDay broadcast from Iowa City on Saturday, ahead of the top-15 matchup between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Ohio State Buckeyes, Pat McAfee's kicking contest once again took center stage. The segment, which has become a weekly highlight since McAfee joined the show, gave Iowa student Finley a chance to win $1,000,000 by kicking a football through the uprights.
Finley's first attempt, taken while wearing Ugg slippers, barely made contact with the ball. Her second try, after removing the slippers and taking a running start, fell just short. As a result, the grand prize was reduced to $150,000, which McAfee immediately matched with a $150,000 donation to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
The moment turned heartwarming when former Iowa football star and NFL tight end Dallas Clark stepped in and successfully kicked the ball through the uprights, securing $150,000 for Finley and an additional $150,000 for the children's hospital. The total contribution from that kick amounted to $300,000.
On Monday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee revealed he would go further and honor the original $1,000,000 prize by donating that full amount to the children's hospital. "A lot of people are like coming after me a little bit for not doing the donation," McAfee said. "And I think those people were pretty right. It didn't feel right after, uh, I was kind of thinking about it. Well donate $1 million to that children's hospital. I would like to be a part of the help for them. I think we're gonna be doing some work together in the future here."
He continued, "So it was $150,000 because Dallas Clark was able to throw it after the million was kind of rescinded after a missed kick. So I would just like to let everybody know I will be donating; we will be donating $1 million to that hospital. We would like to thank that hospital for their hospitality and for what they do. And they need to know how much they empower and help everybody else that comes in contact with them."
McAfee also shared a message on social media, stating, "We will donate one million dollars to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital. We would like to thank that hospital for everything that they do #PMSLive."
He wrapped up his announcement with a special message for the children at the hospital: "And keep kicking *ss, which was really the only messaging that I kept saying to everybody as I was losing in tic-tac-toe and cornhole and coloring and finger football they were playing out there It was special, and, uh, those kids are awesome, and I can't wait to see them again. I'll see them soon."
Key Analysis
McAfee's decision to fulfill the original $1 million pledge demonstrates his commitment to charitable causes and his responsiveness to public feedback. The incident highlights the emotional connection between sports figures and local communities, especially when children's hospitals are involved. By turning a missed kick into a million-dollar gift, McAfee has created a lasting impact that extends far beyond the football field.
