During Tuesday's morning session, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette made a spectacular touchdown grab, but the celebration quickly turned to concern as he remained down on the turf for several minutes. The third-year pro pulled in a deep fade from quarterback Bryce Young, beating defensive back Cam Miller in tight coverage during a 7-on-7 drill, but landed awkwardly on his side and head.
As the offense erupted in cheers, Legette stayed motionless, prompting the music to halt. Quarterback Bryce Young and tight end Tommy Tremble knelt beside him, seemingly in prayer, while four trainers attended to him, checking his extremities. The 6-foot-3, 221-pound receiver eventually rose under his own power, climbed into the front seat of a cart, and was driven off the field, appearing alert and in good spirits.
Coach's Assessment
Head coach Dave Canales later told reporters that Legette passed concussion testing but sustained what appears to be a stinger. "We went in and evaluated him and cleared him of a concussion," Canales said. "But it looks like a stinger, so we're going to evaluate him more over the next day or so to make sure he's in the right spot." Canales noted that the timing is favorable since the Panthers do not plan to play their starters in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Jets in Canton, Ohio.
The injury adds to a growing list of preseason ailments for Carolina. The team has already lost outside linebacker Nic Scourton and rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell to season-ending injuries, and starting left guard Damien Lewis continues to battle a lingering calf issue. Legette, who had a challenging 2025 season, arrived at camp in peak condition, having shed 7-10 pounds and taken measures to prevent the hamstring problems that hampered him earlier in his career.
With Brazzell, a third-round pick and deep threat, out for the year, Legette's role becomes even more critical. Teammate Jalen Coker praised Legette's summer performance, saying he has been "balling all summer." Canales echoed that sentiment last week, stating, "We have big plans for him. He's got big plans for himself." The team will monitor Legette closely over the next day or two as they prepare for the preseason opener.
