The Florida Panthers have once again received favorable medical news regarding a key player's injury, marking the second time in a week that the team has avoided a worst-case scenario.
Just days after learning that captain Aleksander Barkov's left knee injury will likely sideline him for six to eight weeks, the Panthers got a similarly optimistic report on Brad Marchand. Head coach Paul Maurice announced that the veteran forward is expected to miss approximately six weeks due to a left leg injury suffered in the second period of Florida's 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, which concluded a 2-0-2 road trip to begin the 2026-27 season.
Marchand is anticipated to resume skating after three weeks, followed by another three weeks of conditioning. The injury occurred when he drove to the net and was caught by the stick of Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke. He was attended to on the ice by the team's medical staff and then helped off by teammates Brady Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola, without putting any weight on his left leg.
Overall, it was another collective sigh of relief. "Nobody said months yet," Maurice said, "so we're taking weeks."
The update comes three days after Maurice revealed that Barkov would be out six to eight weeks with a left knee injury sustained on October 1 against the San Jose Sharks. Speaking Thursday in Boca Raton, Barkov said he was meeting with the team's physical trainers on Friday to outline his rehab schedule and aims to return as soon as possible.
"Obviously, it's not the thing you want to have, especially after what I went through last year," Barkov said at an event where he received a key to the city of Boca Raton. "But it is what it is. Trying to stay positive, and the team is doing really well. It was a good road trip, so I'm really, really happy."
In the meantime, the Panthers' forward depth is already being tested. Lars Eller centered a line with Brady Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart on Friday—the same line Barkov centered to start the season and that Marchand joined after Barkov's injury. Eller, who had been centering Florida's fourth line, is tied for the team lead with three points (all assists) through four games.
The Panthers (2-0-2) will host their home opener against the Minnesota Wild (2-1-1) on Saturday at 6 p.m. on Scripps Sports.
Key Analysis
The Panthers' ability to withstand injuries to top players like Barkov and Marchand will be crucial as they navigate the early season. The team's depth, exemplified by Eller's elevated role, will be tested, but the positive prognoses for both stars provide hope for a relatively quick return to full strength.
