The Green Bay Packers will be without a key defensive contributor when they face the Detroit Lions on Sunday, as linebacker Zaire Franklin has been ruled out due to a shin injury sustained during Thursday's practice.
Head coach Matt LaFleur informed reporters during his Friday press conference that Franklin was injured in a collision. "Unfortunately, Zaire, there was a little collision — he got kneed in the shin," LaFleur said. "So, he's going to be out this game."
LaFleur expressed optimism that the injury won't keep Franklin sidelined for an extended period. "I don't think it's going to be anything too long-term," he added. "But, yeah, just [an] unfortunate deal. That happens when you play football, especially the way our guys have been practicing."
With Franklin unavailable, Ty'Ron Hopper and Isaiah McDuffie are expected to see expanded roles on defense. "I think we've got a lot of confidence in McDuffie, and Hopper, and Nick Niemann if need be, to go in there and do a great job for us," LaFleur said.
The Packers' linebacker depth will be put to the test, as Edgerrin Cooper is already on injured reserve. Green Bay's full injury report with game statuses will be released later on Friday.
Key Analysis
Franklin's absence creates a significant challenge for the Packers' defense, especially with Cooper already sidelined. The team's confidence in Hopper, McDuffie, and Niemann will be crucial as they face a divisional rival in the Lions. LaFleur's comments suggest the injury is not severe, but the Packers must navigate this depth test in the meantime.
