Packers Add QB Cam Miller to Practice Squad After Tom Brady's Strong Recommendation

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers made a move to bolster their practice squad on Monday, signing quarterback Cam Miller. The transaction was announced by the team.

Miller, a sixth-round selection by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2025 draft, enjoyed a decorated college career at North Dakota State, where he completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 81 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, leading the Bison to two FCS national championships.

Before the draft, Miller received high praise from an unexpected source: Tom Brady. The seven-time Super Bowl champion, who is now a minority owner of the Raiders, admired Miller's throwing motion and fundamentals. "Tom Brady liked the way he threw it, his technique, throwing from the ground up and his motion," Raiders general manager John Spytek told The Athletic after the draft. "And he thought he had the potential to improve."

Miller's winning pedigree was a key factor in the Raiders' evaluation. "I haven't had any interaction with Tom," Miller said after being drafted, "but from every conversation that I've had with the GM [John Spytek], he has talked to me about how they want to bring in people that are winners, and who have been accustomed and used to winning games. And I think that that was really the x-factor in their choice to take me in the draft."

From Raiders to Dolphins to Packers

Miller spent his rookie season on the Raiders' practice squad without appearing in a game. Late in the season, the Miami Dolphins signed him to their 53-man roster. However, he was unable to secure a roster spot or practice squad position with Miami after the preseason, where he completed 42.1 percent of his passes for 170 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Despite the setbacks, Miller focused on his growth. "I think just my knowledge of the game is what grew the most," he said late in training camp. "I think [offensive coordinator] Bobby Slowik has done such a great job of teaching the quarterbacks defense and running his system. I've been such a huge fan of him and the way that he's helped develop quarterbacks in the past, and it's been so great to just learn the game of football from him. I think that's been some of the most improvement, just seeing the field a lot better than I did in the past."

A native of Solon, Iowa, Miller was a first-team All-American as a senior in 2024 and finished second in the Walter Payton Award voting, the FCS equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. He set school records for total yards (11,998), completion percentage (69.4), and passing yards (9,721), and tied Easton Stick's school record with 129 total touchdowns.

Pro-Style Passer in College

Although he played at the FCS level, Miller was well-prepared for the NFL due to his experience in a pro-style offense at North Dakota State. "I just think coming from a pro-style offense at North Dakota State, I'm accustomed to playing under center, playing in the gun, playing a pro-style offense," he said after being drafted. "I think NDSU prepared me well, just with the system, doing under center play action, everything that we did in the gun I think is going to translate to the next level. I'm excited to dive into the playbook and start to understand it a little bit more."

Dane Brugler of The Athletic described Miller as an intelligent game manager who lacks a power arm but delivers with anticipation and accuracy. "The son of a football coach, his mental approach and on-field production showed improvements each season, although he will continue to have his doubters because of the level of competition he faced," Brugler wrote. "Overall, Miller won't wow you right away because the physical traits are average. The more you watch, though, the more you come to appreciate his decision-making and feel for the position. He can be an asset in an NFL quarterback room as a reserve."

The Packers' previous practice squad quarterback was Kedon Slovis. It is not immediately clear if Slovis was released in a corresponding move. Slovis had spent the last two months on Green Bay's practice squad after competing for a roster spot with the Arizona Cardinals during training camp.

In an interview with Packers On SI after being signed, Slovis discussed his goals: "Just to develop and I think get to the point where coaches trust you to be a guy where they can, whether it's a backup role or feel like they can bring you in and play in some games. Obviously, the goal is to be a guy that they want to play but, obviously, there's some steps to go before that. So, I think that's the next part is just develop as much as I can and kind of let the chips fall with me."
