During an appearance on the 100% Hockey podcast hosted by Daren Millard and John Shannon, Green recounted how general manager Steve Staios informed him of the impending trade about a month after the season concluded.
"It was probably about a month after the season, three weeks that [Staios] brought me up to speed, and he asked me if I was surprised," Green recalled. "Oh man, a little bit, of course." Green, who previously coached the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils, explained that the Senators' young core, including Tkachuk, was a significant reason he accepted the coaching position in Canada's capital.
"So to hear that he had asked to be traded and he was going to be moved at some point — you know, unfortunate is a word I probably will use a lot," Green said. "I can't speak for Brady; I was a little surprised; a little, you know, would I say mad? A little bit."
