The San Francisco 49ers are widely regarded as one of the NFL's most talented teams.
However, questions remain about the aging core of the roster and the team's recent injury history.
Despite losing several key contributors to injuries last season, the 49ers still reached the playoffs.
With better health in 2026, many expect San Francisco to remain among the NFC's top contenders.
ESPN's Bill Barnwell recently evaluated every NFL roster, identifying the players who would command at least a first-round draft pick in a trade as a way to measure each team's top-end talent (h/t to Florio Maniego of NBC Sports Bay Area for the find).
According to Barnwell, only three 49ers meet that threshold.
He starts with defensive end Nick Bosa, the only player on the roster he believes would be worth more than a single first-round pick.
Of course, Bosa's injury history could give some teams pauseif the 49ers were ever willing to move him.
"Organizations are used to dealing with players who have torn an ACL, but there's more reticence in targeting players who have two ACL tears on their resume," Barnwell wrote.
"Nobody doubts Bosa's impact when he's on the field -- he helped win the 49ers each of their first two games last season before tearing up his knee in Week 3 -- but he now has multiple ACL tears across the past six seasons." Barnwell identified quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner as the only other 49ers players worthy of a first-round pick in a trade.
Purdy, still just 26 years old, has overcome his status as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to establish himself as one of the league's most efficient quarterbacks and a proven leader of Kyle Shanahan's offense.
Like Bosa, Warner's 2025 season was cut short by injury.
Even so, Barnwell rightfully still considers him the NFL's premier linebacker.
"Warner is also coming off a season impacted by a serious ankle injury, and he turns 30 in November," Barnwell wrote.
"But he's also very comfortably the best linebacker in football by my estimation.
He would be the exception to a handful of rules, although that might be a tougher sell given the ankle injury than it would have been in years past." Interestingly, several accomplished 49ers veterans did not make Barnwell's list, including wide receiver Mike Evans, tight end George Kittle, running back Christian McCaffrey, and left tackle Trent Williams.
"Age and injury hurt here," Barnwell explained.
"Evans is 32 and coming off his first injury-ruined season as a pro.
Kittle is 32 and recovering from a torn Achilles suffered during the postseason.
McCaffrey is 30, and while he was one of the few 49ers to stay healthy last season, his injury history is well known." Barnwell also pointed out that Williams is 38 years old and hasn't played a full season since 2013.
"These legends are still productive, valuable players," Barnwell added.
"But they're worth more to the 49ers as a unit than they are in trades to any other team." Barnwell also noted that recent first-round picks Ricky Pearsall and Mykel Williams haven't built enough value to command a first-round pick in a trade at this stage of their careers.
