Week 5 of Oklahoma high school football proved largely uneventful, with few surprises across the state. Among the top 25 teams, only three suffered defeats, and none of those losses could be considered shocking.
The most notable result involved then-No. 7 Owasso, which fell 20-17 on the road to Jenks in a game that many viewed as a toss-up. Two other ranked squads lost at home: No. 11 Muskogee was upended by Piedmont, partly due to a bizarre play before halftime when the Wildcats forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Additionally, No. 17 Tulsa Booker T. Washington was defeated at home by a winless Tulsa Union team, marking a clear upset.
Every other team in last week's Top 25 either emerged victorious or did not play. As Week 6 approaches, the question remains whether the calm will continue or if chaos will erupt. The answers will come Friday, but for now, here are the updated rankings:
Top 5 Hold Steady
1. Bixby (5-0) remained No. 1 after an 80-0 demolition of Westmoore. Three Spartans quarterbacks combined to complete 24 of 27 passes, each throwing at least one touchdown, with junior Reece Madden tossing five. Next: at Edmond Memorial on Friday, Oct. 9.
2. Midwest City Carl Albert (6-0) stayed at No. 2 and set a state 11-man record with its 59th consecutive win, a decisive victory at Noble. That streak is also the longest active winning streak in the nation. Next: vs. Durant on Friday, Oct. 9.
3. Broken Arrow (5-0) held at No. 3 after cruising past Edmond Memorial, 44-7. Senior quarterback Shamar Banner, a transfer from another state, continued to impress with 189 passing yards and a touchdown, plus three rushing scores. Next: at Westmoore on Friday, Oct. 9.
4. Elgin (5-0) remained No. 4. After playing four of their first five games on the road and coming off a bye, the Owls return home Friday. Next: vs. Newcastle on Friday, Oct. 9.
5. Tuttle (4-1) stayed at No. 5 with a second straight 56-0 shutout, this time at Tecumseh. Next: vs. Blanchard on Friday, Oct. 9.
Jenks Climbs After Thrilling Win
7. Jenks (3-2) moved up from No. 9 after edging Owasso, 20-17, in a back-and-forth contest. An interception set up the game-winning field goal, and another pick sealed the win as the Rams were driving late. First-year tailback CJ Wright played a key role, rushing for 160 yards and a touchdown. Next: at Edmond Deer Creek on Friday, Oct. 9.
8. Sulphur (4-1) held at No. 8. The Bulldogs have outscored their last two opponents 130-0, including a 62-0 win over Seminole in which they rushed for 313 yards, 111 from Jojo Gray, who also scored twice. Next: at Idabel on Friday, Oct. 9.
9. Sallisaw (5-0) rose from No. 10. The Black Diamonds avoided a letdown after their comeback win over Broken Bow, shutting out Mannford, 42-0. They now host a 5-0 Stilwell team. Next: vs. Stilwell on Friday, Oct. 9.
10. Broken Bow (4-1) climbed from No. 12. The Savages bounced back from their loss at Sallisaw with a 62-31 home win over Poteau. Quarterback and Oklahoma commit Greydon Howell amassed over 450 total yards, throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more. Next: at Tulsa McLain on Friday, Oct. 9.
Other Notable Rankings
11. Bishop McGuinness (4-1) moved up from No. 13. Senior running back Dre'Andre Bruton rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-17 win over Claremore. The Irish will need another big game from him against Pryor's strong rushing attack. Next: at Pryor on Friday, Oct. 9.
12. Owasso (2-3) dropped from No. 7. The Rams' three losses have come against arguably the top three teams in 6AI: Bixby, Broken Arrow, and Jenks. A tough schedule could benefit them in the playoffs. Next: vs. Moore on Friday, Oct. 9.
13. Choctaw (4-2) stayed at No. 14. After starting 0-2 at home, the Yellowjackets won three straight on the road before finally winning at home last week, 72-0 over Putnam City West. Next: at Piedmont on Friday, Oct. 9.
14. Coweta (5-0) jumped from No. 18. The Tigers escaped McAlester with a 29-28 win. A victory over Bishop Kelley this week would put them in control of the 5A-3 title race. Next: vs. Bishop Kelley on Friday, Oct. 9.
15. Stillwater (2-2) remained No. 15. The Pioneers were idle last week and return to action aiming to contend in a wide-open 6AII-2 district. Next: vs. Ponca City on Friday, Oct. 9.
16. Jones (4-1) held at No. 16. The Longhorns handled Catoosa, 56-7. They play their fourth home game this week and have one regular-season home game remaining after Friday. Next: vs. Eufaula on Friday, Oct. 9.
17. Yukon (6-0) climbed from No. 20. The Millers, who beat Bartlesville 76-42, could be 8-0 when Jenks visits on Oct. 23. First, they must face a confident Tulsa Union team that won its first game last week. Next: at Tulsa Union on Friday, Oct. 9.
18. Talihina (5-0) stayed at No. 19. The Golden Tigers won decisively again, 55-14 over Gore, and are on track for the A-II-3 district crown. Next: vs. Porter on Friday, Oct. 9.
19. Mustang (3-2) remained No. 21. In a 48-0 win over Southmoore, the Broncos recorded eight sacks, three from senior Maddox Gregg, son of former Oklahoma and NFL defensive lineman Kelly Gregg. Next: vs. Edmond North on Friday, Oct. 9.
20. Cascia Hall (5-0) held at No. 22. The Commandos beat Crooked Oak, 41-13. Next: at Chisholm on Friday, Oct. 9.
21. Muskogee (3-2) fell from No. 11. The Roughers dropped two straight at home, to Choctaw and then to Piedmont, 31-28. They are home again this week against Booker T. Washington in a matchup of teams desperate for a win. Next: vs. Tulsa Booker T. Washington on Friday, Oct. 9.
22. Washington (4-1) stayed at No. 23. Since an overtime loss to Sulphur, the Warriors have won three straight by a combined 123 points, including a 43-13 home win over Dickson. Next: at OKC Casady on Friday, Oct. 9.
23. Weatherford (6-0) remained No. 24. The Eagles stayed unbeaten with a 23-7 win over arch-rival Clinton in the Custer County Conflict. They appear to be in the driver's seat for the District 4A-1 title. Next: at Elk City on Friday, Oct. 9.
24. Pawhuska (6-0) held at No. 25. Senior receiver Tripp Walker caught seven passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, part of a 242-yard receiving effort in a 44-21 win over Morrison. Next: at Summit Christian on Friday, Oct. 9.
25. Holdenville (5-0) entered the rankings as the lone newcomer. The Wolverines are contending for the 2AII title and have three shutouts, though they didn't get one in their latest game, a 48-14 win at Atoka. Next: vs. Kellyville on Friday, Oct. 9.
