On Monday, Nov. 2, Fanatics and the NHL introduced their Hometown Remix jersey collection, and the New York Islanders have revived their controversial snarling fisherman logo from 1995. The emblem, once mocked as the "Gorton's fisherman," lasted only two seasons and was quickly eliminated in a fan-designed contest for a third jersey in 2027-28, where a lighthouse design won. Nevertheless, the fisherman jersey will be worn for select home games this season.
At least the Buffalo Sabres avoided bringing back the Buffaslug jersey, instead choosing the snorting buffalo head. The Hometown Remix does mix things up: the Anaheim Ducks, currently orange, will switch to green; the Chicago Blackhawks also move from red to green; the Pittsburgh Penguins adopt their early dark blue and light blue palette; the Los Angeles Kings revert to purple; the Washington Capitals bring back their sharp Capitol dome logo; and the Detroit Red Wings add "Hockeytown" above their winged wheel.
Other teams take a different approach: the Tampa Bay Lightning feature a skull, the Carolina Hurricanes display mascot Stormy, the Columbus Blue Jackets include the scary loud cannon that causes visitors to jump, the Utah Mammoth incorporate a U and a tusk, and the Seattle Kraken use an anchor, ironically in a season when the team doesn't seem weighed down.
Key Analysis
The standout design belongs to the San Jose Sharks. Their shark looks more menacing than the regular logo, isn't biting a stick, and is popping through the letters SJ—enough to frighten a fisherman. While the Islanders' nostalgic misstep may raise eyebrows, the Sharks' bold update and other creative twists make the Hometown Remix collection a mixed bag of hits and misses.
