The Washington Nationals have entered the last week of the 2026 regular season, with only six games remaining on their schedule. Their current road series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park marks the final away games of the year. As the season winds down, the conclusion feels abrupt, with spring training seemingly just a recent memory.
For this matchup, the Nationals are deploying a lineup heavy on left-handed hitters to counter a right-handed starting pitcher. Abimelec Ortiz is slated to bat third and play first base. Daylen Lile will serve as the designated hitter, which shifts James Wood to left field, Jacob Young to center field, and Dylan Crews to right field. Jorbit Vivas takes over at second base, moving CJ Abrams to shortstop.
On the mound for Washington, DJ Herz is set to make his first appearance since 2024. The team welcomed him back with a social media post on September 21, 2026.
The Tigers, managed by AJ Hinch, are stacking their lineup with right-handed bats, leaving Riley Greene as the only left-handed hitter. Javier Baez, traditionally an infielder, will start in center field, continuing his recent trend of playing more outfield. River Ryan, a 28-year-old prospect acquired in the deadline trade that sent Tarik Skubal elsewhere, will start for Detroit. Ryan possesses impressive stuff but has faced challenges staying healthy.
The game is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET at Comerica Park. Television coverage is available on Nationals.TV, and radio listeners can tune in to 106.7 The Fan. The pitching matchup features two talented arms who have seen limited action recently, adding intrigue to the contest. Both Herz and Ryan are making their season debuts, and fans can follow the action in the comments section.
