A spectator was removed from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 7, following a ruling of fan interference during the New York Yankees' final game of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Major League Baseball.
The incident occurred in the sixth inning with the Rays leading 4-2. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe drove a fly ball to deep left field that appeared destined for the seats. However, a fan seated in the front row reached over the railing and pulled the ball into the stands, preventing it from landing naturally.
Volpe initially circled the bases, believing he had hit a two-run home run. But after umpires reviewed the play, the call was reversed. Volpe was sent back to second base with a double, and George Lombard Jr., who had been on base, was awarded a run scored.
In a statement, Major League Baseball explained that after examining all relevant angles, it definitively determined the spectator had interfered with the ball over the field of play. The league concluded that the ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught by a fielder.
"The call is OVERTURNED, there was spectator interference and no home run," the league said. "Additionally, the Replay Official scored one run and placed the batter-runner at second."
Rays left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. immediately signaled for interference as Volpe rounded the bases. "On that play, I feel that the ball carried a little bit more than it should," Mesa told TBS. "In my opinion, I feel that I could catch the ball or at least could have touched my glove. But it is what it is."
Video footage later surfaced on social media showing the fan, who was wearing a Yankees windbreaker, being escorted out of the stadium by security personnel after the ruling.
The Rays escaped the sixth inning without allowing another run and went on to sweep the best-of-five series 3-0, ending the Yankees' season.
Key Analysis
The decision by Major League Baseball to overturn the home run and eject the fan underscores the strict enforcement of spectator interference rules. While the fan's action may have been instinctive, it ultimately deprived Volpe of a potential home run and altered the game's momentum. The league's definitive ruling, based on video review, highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring that fans do not influence the outcome of plays.
