Minnesota Gophers Face Major Roster Shake-Up After Tori McKinney's Season-Ending Injury

Head coach Dawn Plitzuweit has built a reputation for bringing in high-caliber talent through the transfer portal and high school recruiting during her tenure with the Minnesota Gophers. That ability to assemble a deep roster will now face a significant test following the news that last season's leading scorer, Tori McKinney, will miss the entire upcoming campaign due to a knee injury.

Plitzuweit addressed the setback with local media, acknowledging the gravity of the situation while highlighting McKinney's resilient nature. "Losing Tori for the season is a major loss for our team," Plitzuweit said. "What we also know to be true is: anyone who has been around Tori McKinney understands how competitive she is, and she's competitive in everything that she does." The coach elaborated on McKinney's drive, noting that she applies the same intensity to academics, basketball, coaching kids at camp, and even interactions with officials. "That's going to serve her extremely well as she goes through this comeback season," Plitzuweit added.

The impact of McKinney's absence extends beyond the stat sheet. "We also know what that means for our team," Plitzuweit explained. "It means that other players at this point in time need to increase their roles and step up. And we're aware, they're aware, and doing those types of things."

McKinney, a 6-foot-1 guard, was arguably Minnesota's most indispensable player last season due to her two-way versatility. She averaged 27.2 minutes per game and also contributed as a facilitator with 2.6 assists per contest, the third-highest mark on the team. While the Gophers possess the depth to absorb her loss, doing so will require relying on younger, less experienced players.

Key Analysis: Options to Fill the Void

If the Minnesota coaching staff is considering internal replacements for the starting lineup, forward Taylor Woodson emerges as a logical candidate. Woodson has endured back-to-back season-ending knee injuries, but she brings valuable experience as she enters her third year at Minnesota and fifth in college basketball. In the 2024-25 season, she averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Beyond the starting five, the injury creates a substantial opportunity for guards Natalie Kussow, Makena Christian, and Tori Oehrlein to assume larger roles. Christian, who saw limited action as a true freshman with just 10.7 minutes per game, showed flashes by scoring in double figures three times, including a 23-point performance in her first career game. Kussow, a Wisconsin native, and Oehrlein, from Minnesota, were both highly touted prep players in the Midwest. All three were four-star recruits and possess playmaking skills that could help offset McKinney's facilitating duties.

McKinney's injury undoubtedly lowers Minnesota's floor for the upcoming season, but whether it also lowers the ceiling remains uncertain. The Gophers are ranked No. 17 in the preseason AP Poll, a position that reflects high expectations. If the young guards are ready to contribute sooner than anticipated, the team might avoid a significant drop-off. If not, the season could prove bumpier than their ranking suggests.
