When former head coach Dusty May left Michigan basketball for the NBAs Dallas Mavericks, the hiring of Mike Boynton as interim head coach was seen as a stabilizing move for the program.
On Friday, Michigan leaned even more into that stability, removing the interim tag from Boynton and officially naming him the head coach of the national champions.
Boynton, who has previously served as head coach at Oklahoma State, joined Mays staff shortly after May was named head coach at Michigan, after Mays previous stint at Florida Atlantic.
On Mays staff, Boynton has been in charge of the teams defense.
Michigan was the top defensive team in the country on its way to the schools second national title this past season.
Im grateful to [athletic director] Warde [Manuel] for his confidence and thankful for the opportunity to lead this program, Boynton said in a statement.
We have built a championship culture and a standard that everyone associated with this program takes great pride in.
We have an outstanding group of players, and Im excited to get to work and continue the success weve established together.
One of the key things Boynton and the Michigan staff were able to do following the teams national title run was to keep most of their teams most important players together.
Retention, in addition to bringing players in, is key as they look to repeat as national champions next season.
One of those players is a newcomer, Brandon McCoy Jr., one of the top freshmen entering college basketball next season.
