Michigan Basketball Hosts Top-30 Prospect Devin Cleveland for Official Visit Before Commitment

Recruiting activity had slowed for Michigan basketball after Dusty May departed for the NBA, but the Wolverines are now making moves under new head coach Mike Boynton Jr. Since taking over, Boynton Jr. has focused on retaining the current roster and assembling his staff. With those tasks completed and the 2026-27 season approaching, the program is turning its attention to the 2027 recruiting class. This weekend, one highly sought-after prospect is in Ann Arbor for an official visit.

Devin Cleveland, a 6-foot-3 combo guard from La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana, is expected to announce his commitment on October 16. Michigan appears to have a final opportunity to impress him before he makes his decision. Cleveland had shown significant interest in the Wolverines following their national title run last season, and that interest has persisted despite the coaching change. This visit marks Cleveland's third official visit in recent weeks; he previously visited TCU and Missouri. He is ranked as the No. 29 prospect in the 2027 class by the 247Sports Composite.

Connection to Michigan

In August, Cleveland discussed his interest in Michigan, highlighting assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen as a key factor. Miskdeen was retained on Boynton Jr.'s staff. According to Rivals' Recruiting Prediction Machine, Michigan is currently the leader in Cleveland's recruitment with a 38.1% chance of landing him, followed by Missouri. Cleveland told Rivals, "I know there been coaching changes recently but Coach Akeem [Miskdeen] another Chicago guy who Ive been building a connection for the past three years reached out to reassure me that they are still confident in the coaching staff and the teams ability to compete at the highest level. Im looking forward to building a connection with Coach (Mike) Boynton and seeing how my game can fit into what theyre building. Ill be watching his play style throughout the season."

Looking Ahead

Michigan may lose Trey McKenney to the NBA after the upcoming season, as the former five-star recruit is expected to contend for Big Ten Player of the Year. If McKenney departs, Cleveland, a natural shooting guard, could step in and contribute immediately. Cleveland shot 47% from the field during the EYBL season, and the Wolverines are always in need of guards who can knock down three-pointers.
