Michigan Basketball Faces Houston in Final Exhibition Tune-Up: How to Watch and Key Storylines

Michigan's men's basketball team will play its third and final exhibition game on Sunday, October 25, against the Houston Cougars at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET and will be streamed on Big Ten+. The Wolverines have already secured victories over Eastern Michigan and Oregon State in their first two preseason outings, and now they face a significant step up in competition against one of the nation's top programs.

With the regular season opener set for November 2, Michigan is using this matchup to gauge whether its revamped roster can compete with elite teams. Houston, a perennial powerhouse, provides a stern test that should reveal plenty about the Wolverines' readiness.

Roddy Gayle Jr.'s Debut and Integration

Roddy Gayle Jr. is set to suit up for the first time this preseason after his injunction was updated, clearing the way for him to play. Head coach Mike Boynton Jr. has indicated that Gayle Jr. will start on the wing alongside Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney. Gayle Jr., now in his third season with the program, brings experience but must quickly mesh with new teammates. Boynton Jr. has praised Gayle Jr.'s increased explosiveness and improved court vision, suggesting he could be the key piece that elevates Michigan back into national contention.

Three-Point Shooting Efficiency

Michigan's offensive identity this season will revolve around scoring, with Boynton Jr. expecting the team to attempt more three-pointers. However, efficiency from beyond the arc remains a concern. The Wolverines shot 38% from deep against Eastern Michigan but managed just 25% against Oregon State. In that second exhibition, Cadeau, McKenney, and Moustapha Thiam combined to shoot 5-for-18 from three-point range. If Michigan intends to rely on the long ball, that percentage must improve significantly.

Expanded Role for Ricky Liburd

Boynton Jr. announced that Jalen Reed and Ricky Liburd are no longer under minute restrictions, which is positive news for the Wolverines. Liburd, projected as a breakout player and potential sixth man, logged 11 and 15 minutes in the first two exhibitions, respectively, scoring five total points on limited shot attempts. With his minutes no longer capped, Liburd should see extended playing time against Houston and has an opportunity to showcase his abilities in a larger role off the bench.
