Michael Penix Rib Injury Not Long-Term, Falcons QB Could Return Soon

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix exited the team's Week 5 loss to the Baltimore Ravens due to a rib injury. However, the former first-round draft choice may be back on the field sooner than initially feared.

Selected eighth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Penix spent the early part of his rookie campaign on the bench before replacing an ineffective Kirk Cousins late in the season. During his starts, the team posted a 1-2 record, but Penix showed promise, ending the year with a 58.1% completion rate, 775 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

That strong finish propelled Penix into the 2025 season as the Falcons' starting quarterback. Yet he was unable to carry over his momentum, guiding the team to a 3-6 record while completing 60.1% of his passes for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions before suffering a torn ACL.

Penix made his return in Week 3 and led Atlanta to two dominant victories, but he left the Week 5 contest early with the rib injury. Although he did not return to the game, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the quarterback does not believe the injury will be a long-term concern.

Key Analysis

This development is highly encouraging for the Falcons, as a healthy Michael Penix gives the team its best opportunity to win. While he has yet to fully justify his top-10 draft selection, Penix is a significant upgrade over Cooper Rush and Tua Tagovailoa. In Penix's absence, the former Dolphins backup threw a game-deciding interception.

If Michael Penix is unable to suit up, Tua Tagovailoa will start against the Chicago Bears in Week 6. Tagovailoa has attempted only three passes this season, completing two for 34 yards and an interception. Meanwhile, third-string quarterback Cooper Rush struggled mightily during his two weeks of action earlier in the season.

The Chicago Bears are coming off a lopsided loss to the Green Bay Packers and may have former first-overall pick Caleb Williams back in the lineup.
