Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury during the fourth quarter of Monday night's 30-23 overtime defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. The injury occurred after Penix absorbed a heavy hit in the pocket.
Penix, 26, had a productive outing before the injury, passing for 240 yards and a touchdown. However, on the final drive of regulation, he took a big hit from Ravens defender Tavius Robinson and fumbled, though Atlanta managed to recover the loose ball.
The game proceeded to overtime, where the Ravens scored a touchdown on their opening possession. Penix remained on the sideline and was replaced by Tua Tagovailoa, who threw an interception on the second play of the drive, sealing the Falcons' loss.
Key Analysis
Injuries have been a recurring theme throughout Penix's career. The young quarterback appeared in only nine games last season after suffering a left ACL injury that required season-ending surgery. He also missed the first two games of the current NFL season but provided a spark upon his return, helping Atlanta win two consecutive games before Sunday night.
Penix's injury history extends back to his college days, where he tore his ACL twice and also dealt with shoulder injuries that cost him significant playing time. It has been a bumpy road from a health perspective.
Depending on the severity of this latest injury, Tagovailoa could be called upon to start. The veteran quarterback was released by the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2026 campaign after a string of disappointing seasons, but he brings plenty of experience with 76 career starts.
