Miami vs. Florida: No. 14 Hurricanes Face No. 1 Gators in High-Stakes Season Opener

College basketball returns with a marquee matchup as No. 14 Miami hosts No. 1 Florida in the season opener for both teams on Monday, Nov. 2, at 6:00 p.m. ET at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Fla. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

For Miami, the contest marks the second year under head coach Jai Lucas, who guided the Hurricanes to 26 wins and a Round of 32 appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. Lucas has emphasized the need for his team to compete at a championship level, and facing the preseason No. 1 Gators provides an immediate test. Last season, this matchup occurred midway through the non-conference schedule, but this year it serves as the opening game for both the SEC and ACC programs.

Injury Report

Miami is expected to have Malik Reneau and Egor Ryzhov available after both missed the exhibition against Vanderbilt due to illness and precautionary reasons. However, the Hurricanes will be without Marcus Allen and LJ Cason, who are projected to miss most, if not all, of the season as they recover from ACL injuries. For Florida, star guard Boogie Fland is slated to play after sitting out the Stetson exhibition with an illness. CJ Ingram remains questionable with a back issue and will be a game-time decision.

Series History and Last Meeting

Florida holds a 47-23 advantage in the all-time series. The teams met last season for the first time in several years, with the Gators securing an 82-68 victory in a physical contest. Miami's last outing was a loss to Purdue in the Round of 32, where Shelton Henderson scored 18 points and narrowly missed a double-double. Florida also fell in the Round of 32, dropping a decision to Iowa after a strong regular season.

Keys to the Game

Although this is the first official game for both sides, exhibition play has revealed Miami's potential to shoot the ball at an elite level. The Hurricanes' improved three-point shooting represents a significant shift from last season, and their ability to attack both inside and out has been consistent. Florida's frontcourt and the versatile Boogie Fland present challenges, but Miami is embracing the opportunity. The game is expected to be physical and could hinge on defensive stops and Miami's ability to avoid offensive lulls.

Miami's projected starters: Acaden Lewis, Dante Allen, Shelton Henderson, Malik Reneau, and Somto Cyril.
