Mets' Interest in Tarik Skubal Confirmed by Insider Jon Heyman

The New York Mets are reportedly very interested in signing Tarik Skubal when he becomes a free agent, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman. Heyman, speaking Wednesday via B/R Walk-Off, stated that the Mets' interest is genuine and undeniable.

While the Los Angeles Dodgers are considered a strong contender to re-sign Skubal, the Mets should not be counted out. New York possesses the financial flexibility to make a competitive offer, and the organization appears motivated to do so.

Key Analysis

Heyman noted that the Mets face potential obstacles, particularly the possibility of a salary cap being introduced in the future. He suggested that it might be advantageous for the Mets to finalize a deal before any cap is implemented, though he cautioned that a cap is not certain. The insider also pointed out that the Mets must consider the long-term implications of having both Skubal and Juan Soto on the payroll, especially with other high earners like Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette already under contract.

Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million contract prior to the 2025 season, and Skubal could command a deal in the $400 million range. If a salary cap were to be instituted, the Mets' ability to accommodate such contracts would be uncertain. Nevertheless, the Mets may choose to aggressively pursue Skubal and address any financial ramifications later.

Only time will reveal whether the Mets go all-in on Skubal, but Heyman's report confirms that their interest is legitimate.
