Veteran NBA players often require time to acclimate to a new team, and that process is clearly underway for Boston Celtics newcomers Paul George and Mitchell Robinson. Their performance in Boston's 144-106 preseason dismantling of the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, October 10, offered a glimpse of their potential impact.
Following the game, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla shared his thoughts on how the duo is adjusting to their new surroundings. He pointed out that their defensive contributions are already making a difference. "Defensively, they take things to another level .. it starts there," Mazzulla said. "On the offensive end .. its just a timing thing. What we do is a very read-oriented thing. Timing is very important."
Mazzulla also noted a clear progression in George's play as the game wore on. "So, I thought there was a significant difference from first half to second half on Paul (George)," he added, "but thats on us, thats on me, Derrick (White) and (Jayson Tatum) to put him in positions and bring the offense to him and be further there."
The coach sees similar challenges for Robinson, who is adapting to a more dynamic role than he's used to. "And I think its the same with Mitch (Robinson)," Mazzulla said. "Mitch is just used to being in a pick and roll screener. Were here asking to be a little more dynamic as far as reading off the ball and playing through, so habits that we have to be able to work those guys on. But I think tonight you saw a version of how impactful they could be on the defensive end."
Key Analysis
While the preseason blowout showcased Boston's offensive firepower, Mazzulla's comments underscore the importance of timing and chemistry for the team's new additions. George and Robinson bring defensive intensity, but their offensive integration will require continued reps and adjustments. As the regular season approaches, their ability to read and react within Boston's system will be crucial to the team's success.
