Max Homa and his wife, Lacey, have embraced their time in Japan, and that positive energy is reflected in his play at the Baycurrent Classic. The California native shot a three-under-par 69 in Friday's second round at Yokohama Country Club, elevating his tournament total to nine under.
Homa is currently in a four-way tie for third place, just two strokes behind co-leaders Keith Mitchell and Jacob Bridgeman. This strong showing marks another step in his gradual return to form after a challenging slump.
He climbed to No. 5 in the world rankings in 2023 but has not secured a victory since, dropping to as low as No. 163 earlier this year—a slide that severely tested his patience. However, the 35-year-old has displayed signs of recovery in recent months, including a runner-up finish at the John Deere Classic. With a promising start in the Far East, he is optimistic about ending his victory drought this weekend.
Beyond his performance, Homa is thoroughly enjoying the experience in Yokohama, where he feels a strong connection with the galleries despite a significant language barrier. He likened the atmosphere to that of a major championship.
"They're just amazing," he said of the fans. "My wife mentioned it yesterday, just walking around there, it's cool. They're just happy to have us here; you could feel that. You kind of play into that. They love their golf over here, you can tell, and it's cool. There's a massive language barrier, but you feel like you're communicating with them. It's just fun. It's a classy group of people. It's cool how many of them come out. It's like a major, so it's awesome."
He added, "The culture and the people are so kind and welcoming. Obviously, there's other stuff like the food's amazing and all that, but just the people, just something about it. And when you get to play golf in front of them, it makes it double special. But just walking around here, even Tuesday's buzzing here. It's just fun, it's a fun place to come play golf."
Despite the warm reception, Homa still seeks his home comforts, spending his early mornings watching the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB playoffs. "I get to watch before I play, so I'm not stressed while I play, so that's nice. Shout out to T-Mobile, they've got the plug for the MLB app so I can still watch over here so that's been fun," he said. "Yeah, yesterday I had the phone out on the putting green, and while I was warming up, I got to watch a little bit. It's a unique thing, 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. starts are wild. At least when they won, it set the day off in the right direction."
Key Analysis
Homa's resurgence at the Baycurrent Classic highlights his resilience and adaptability. The supportive Japanese crowd and the major-like environment have clearly boosted his confidence, as evidenced by his candid comments. While his recent form shows promise, the weekend will test whether he can convert this positive momentum into a long-awaited victory. His ability to balance focus on the course with personal enjoyment off it may be the key to ending his winless streak.
