Massachusetts’ top high school baseball players: Meet the state’s best middle infielders

With the 2026 season having concluded, MassLive is taking a position-by-position look at some of the seasons top high school baseball players in the state.

Our fourth list focuses on the states best middle infielders.

These lists were compiled based on the information provided by the coaches who chose to respond.

BEST SECOND BASEMEN AND SHORTSTOPS IN MASSACHUSETTS BASEBALL SS Peter Brooks, Braintree, senior A four-year starter and two-year captain, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute commit was batting .395 through 13 games with 17 hits in 43 at-bats, six doubles, nine RBIs and one home run.

Peter is the heart and soul of Braintree High School baseball, Braintree coach Bill OConnell said in May.

SS James Burniske, Southwick Regional, sophomore Burniske began the season on a delayed timeline while recovering from an offseason ankle injury.

The sophomore showed willingness to take on any role needed, including spending innings in the outfield.

Since returning, he has established himself as the everyday starting shortstop and has consistently shown a team-first mindset, Southwick Regional coach Bobby Reyome said.

SS Nick Capiello, Bridgewater-Raynham, junior A two-sport athlete in baseball and basketball, the junior had a walkoff hit against Framingham early in the season.

Nick is in his first year as a varsity starter, Bridgewater-Raynham coach Cam Fox said.

Has played great defense while batting right around .300.

SS Jack Carey, Hingham, sophomore Carey led the Harbormen offense with two hits and three RBIs and played solid defense at shortstop in a memorable 4-3 win at Billerica Memorial.

The sophomore also plays soccer and basketball for Hingham and is involved with school clubs.

Jack is a coachs dream, Hingham coach Nick DeVito said.

He is selfless and only wants to help the team in any way possible to help get wins.

He has played every inning at shortstop since his freshman year, which is extremely impressive.

Best part is he is already one of the best defensive shortstops in our league.

His hitting is starting to follow.

Jack is going to have an incredible career.

SS Brady Carpenter, Mount Everett, junior The high academic student was batting .478 with a .519 on-base percentage and 22 hits, including 19 singles, one double, one triple and one home run.

He was tied for the team lead with 15 RBIs and had seven stolen bases, striking out only twice all season.

Brady is a first baseman with the athleticism to play shortstop, Mount Everett coach Brian Wade said.

He has played a lockdown shortstop and can make the plays anywhere on the field.

SS CJ Chagnon, Grafton, senior Chagnon is a Florida Gulf Coast University golf commit.

Through May 7, he was batting .286 with 14 hits in 49 at-bats, two doubles, 10 RBIs and 13 runs.

As a junior, he batted .377 with a .494 on-base percentage.

Senior captain and two-hitter in the lineup who gets on base and hits for average, Grafton coach Brian Andersen said.

2B Max Clark, Barnstable, junior Clark took tremendous strides at the plate for the Red Hawks this season, slashing .378/.439/.514 through 13 games.

Max has been invaluable for us as both a pitcher and a fielder, being available day in and day out and bringing consistency to the lineup as well, Barnstable coach Rob Toffolon said.

2B Andy Collins, Oxford, sophomore Collins was batting .356 with a .420 on-base percentage and a .976 on-base plus slugging for the Pirates.

He was tied for the team lead with nine extra-base hits all doubles and had scored 14 runs.

Andy provides excellent defense at second base and a steady consistent bat for us, Oxford coach Kevin Bell said.

SS Jayden Cruz, Bristol Plymouth, senior The Massachusetts Maritime Academy-bound senior also plays second base.

Senior captain Jayden Cruz is a great team player who always gives his best effort on the field and is a great team leader, Bristol Plymouth coach Keith Powers said.

SS Jack Cusson, Frontier Regional, sophomore Cusson went the distance for Frontier Regional, allowing one run and striking out 12 in a 5-1 win over Wahconah.

The sophomore made a position change and stepped into a more critical role at shortstop this season.

Jack is batting .368 with 18 RBIs, Frontier Regional coach Chris Williams said in May.

Outstanding defensively.

2B Mason Daley, Lenox, sophomore Daley was particularly effective after moving to the three-spot in the lineup, batting .500 from that position and helping keep the Millionaires strong up the middle defensively.

Both (Mason Daley and Kody Lesser) have been in the utility role for our team and have moved wherever needed when asked and excelled in those positions, Lenox coach Bryan Maloy said.

2B Austin Daly, Rockland, senior In his third season as Rocklands starting second baseman, Daly battled back from a knee injury sustained during the Thanksgiving football game to deliver a strong senior campaign.

The Fitchburg State University commit was batting .387 with 15 RBIs in 10 starts while providing excellent defense up the middle.

Defensively he plays great second base, Rockland coach Mike Doyle said.

He has the arm of a shortstop, which has proven extremely valuable with some momentum-killing double plays this season.

SS Landon Daveau, Shepherd Hill, junior A Dudley native who plays shortstop and second base, Daveau is uncommitted beyond high school.

Landon has made great strides since the beginning of the season he has plus range and an above-average arm, Shepherd Hill coach Ed Riley said.

2B Jimmy DiCarlo, St.

Johns Prep, junior DiCarlo has been a strong defensive presence for the Eagles, and he was batting .325 with 12 RBIs and showcasing his ability to deliver in clutch situations.

Jimmy leads the team in average with runners in scoring position, St.

Johns Prep coach Dan Letarte said.

2B Aiden Dubois, Clinton, senior Dubois held 2024 defending state champion Oakmont in check late in the 2025 season, allowing two hits and two runs over seven innings in an 8-2 Clinton victory.

The uncommitted senior has been a reliable presence for the Gaels.

Aiden is a dependable two-year starter for us, Clinton coach Tom Santasania said.

SS Chace Earle, Hopkins Academy, senior Earle was exceptional on the mound and at shortstop.

Through eight games, he was batting .543 with 14 runs, 13 RBIs, three doubles, two triples and one home run.

On the mound, he allowed just two hits and zero earned runs in 13 innings with 20 strikeouts.

Chace has been on varsity for five years and three years as a captain, Hopkins Academy coach Daniel Vreeland said.

He really carries that C the way that its supposed to be carried.

SS Josh Elmer, Westfield Technical Academy, junior Elmer has a very high baseball IQ, exhibiting incredible instincts and heads-up base running.

He was having an incredible season, leading the team in batting average (.457), on-base plus slugging (1.194), RBIs (24) and runs (30).

Josh is a sure-handed shortstop with excellent range, a strong arm and the athletic ability to make the difficult plays look routine, Westfield Technical Academy coach Matt Boulanger said.

2B Adrien Garcia, Greater New Bedford RVT, senior After missing several games last year because of a quad injury, Garcia was healthy this season and set the table with his ability to get on base and provide a spark for the offense.

Does all the little things the team needs to win games, Greater New Bedford RVT coach Kyle Alfonso said.

2B Caden Green, Shepherd Hill, senior One of the top second basemen and hitters in Central Massachusetts, Shepherd Hill coach Ed Riley said.

High-level swing with an advanced approach at the plate.

SS Jeff Guzman, Oxford, senior Guzman was batting .489 with a .587 on-base percentage and a 1.502 on-base plus slugging.

The Quinsigamond Community College commit had three home runs, 22 RBIs, a team-high 25 runs and 12 stolen bases.

He delivered a walkoff home run against Bartlett.

Jeff is really the heart of the lineup, Oxford coach Kevin Bell said.

He plays an excellent shortstop and acts as the teams closer I save the big moments for him.

SS Jacoby Haney, Chicopee Comprehensive, junior A right-handed pitcher and shortstop, Haney was 3-2 with a 1.90 ERA in 36 and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 hits in 101 at-bats against with 36 strikeouts.

At the plate, he was batting .368 with 14 hits, 15 RBIs and nine stolen bases.

Haney was the most valuable player of last years sophomore Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association state all-star game.

Jacoby is an outstanding athlete and our leader as he goes, so goes the team, Chicopee Comprehensive coach Justin Franczek said.

SS Hayden Hatch, Rockland, senior Hatch was batting .400 with 16 hits and 10 RBIs while leading the team with 21 runs.

Defensively, hed been automatic with one error through 40 chances.

Last year he was recognized as a South Shore League all-star.

Hayden has been a consistent fixture at shortstop for the past three seasons, Rockland coach Mike Doyle said.

Hes our leader on and off the field and keeps everyone locked in at all times.

2B Patrick Herlihy, West Springfield, senior Herlihy was one of the most consistent players in West Springfields lineup this season, combining stout defense and offensive production.

The senior was batting .433 with a .605 on-base percentage, showing excellent plate discipline and the ability to consistently reach base.

Defensively, Patrick plays superior defense at second base and routinely makes difficult, highlight-reel type plays that change the momentum of games, West Springfield coach Garret Kendziera said.

SS Brady Ihrig, Winchester, junior A transfer from Austin Prep in Reading, Ihrig was batting .356 with 16 hits, including three doubles and two triples.

Earned a starting role at the beginning of the season and has been our best defensive player, Winchester coach Ed McDonald said.

SS Max Inman, Falmouth, junior The junior demonstrates great range and arm strength while remaining calm, cool and collected at all times.

Batting second in the order, Inman was batting .400 with 13 RBIs, 12 runs and five stolen bases.

Max is an incredible athlete, standing 6-foot-3, plays shortstop at a high level and could play anywhere in the field as his bat should always be in the lineup, Falmouth coach Josh Oliver said.

SS Will Johnson, Barnstable, junior Johnson has been dependable defensively and makes big plays when they matter most.

Offensively, he was slashing .350/.435/.475, was second on the team in hits (14) and was tied for the team lead with 12 stolen bases.

After taking over the shortstop position halfway through last season, Will has continued to grow and excel for us in that role, Barnstable coach Rob Toffolon said.

SS Tyler Jones, Sandwich, junior Jones tossed a complete-game two-hitter, surrendering one unearned run in a 5-1 win over East Bridgewater.

Tyler anchors the middle infield and has been the No.

2 pitcher for the Blue Knights this year, Sandwich coach Brian Tomasini said.

SS Kaleb Jorritsma, Smith Vocational, senior Kaleb is the team captain, Smith Vocational coach Luis Bonilla said.

Very coachable, great hitter.

Jorritsma also pitches with good speed and location on the mound.

SS Maxim Kauffman, Narragansett Regional, senior Kauffman was coming off a basketball season in which he became the schools all-time leading scorer.

The Vermont State University basketball commit was batting .360 with 10 RBIs, and he was 2-0 on the mound with a 1.83 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

A versatile athlete who is a high-level competitor, Narragansett Regional coach Jason Donovan said.

SS Liam Kerivan, Turners Falls, freshman Kerivan had two hits and three RBIs in a 6-2 win over Southwick.

The freshman made plays look easy while cutting down his errors.

Liam has taken on a role as a freshman that is not easy, Turners Falls coach Scott Minckler said.

He has grown into a very reliable player in the field.

2B Damian King, Sandwich, junior Damian has been an outstanding infielder for us last year and into his junior season, Blue Knights coach Brian Tomasini said.

He has excellent hands and the highest on-base percentage on the team.

2B Jaxon King, Southwick Regional, seventh grade King served as Southwick Regionals starting second baseman as a seventh-grader, showing exceptional composure and reliability well beyond his age.

Before suffering a broken ankle, he led the team in hits and fielding percentage.

There was very little he could not handle defensively or offensively, Southwick Regional coach Bobby Reyome said.

Even at his young age, Jaxon was emerging as a leader on an extremely young roster.

SS David Kirchner, Lenox, junior A team captain and football quarterback, Kirchner impressed with his strong arm and solid glove.

The junior was batting .440 with 10 RBIs, 10 runs and 10 stolen bases; he had committed only two errors in the field.

David has been a standout at shortstop this season, Lenox coach Bryan Maloy said.

Having been quarterback of the high school team, naturally that leadership carried over.

SS Andrew Kiricoples, Bishop Fenwick, sophomore Kiricoples had 22 hits through 16 games while batting .386 with 11 RBIs, five doubles, one home run and one triple.

The sophomore plays shortstop, outfield and pitcher.

Andrew is a true five-tool player who impacts the game in every aspect, Bishop Fenwick coach James Reiling said.

He stands out for his work ethic and team-first mentality, and hes always willing to do whatever is needed to help the team win.

2B Cam Knudsen, Bridgewater-Raynham, junior A two-sport athlete in baseball and football, Knudsen was batting .280 while being a force on the base paths.

Cam is a tremendous second baseman with great speed, Bridgewater-Raynham coach Cam Fox said.

Cam is the leadoff hitter for Bridgewater-Raynham and continues to improve each and every day.

2B Evan Lamontagne, Fairhaven, senior Lamontagne was batting .354 with 17 hits, four doubles, one triple and 13 RBIs, with a .955 fielding percentage.

His athletic ability allows him to play all positions on the diamond.

Evan is a three-sport (football, basketball and baseball) standout, Fairhaven coach Rudy Bulgar said.

His knowledge of the game is like having another coach on the field.

SS Nate Leandre, Greater New Bedford RVT, senior Leandre is known for making tough plays look easy.

A senior captain, Nate has been the vocal leader in the infield, Greater New Bedford RVT coach Kyle Alfonso said.

His range sets him apart from other infielders on our team.

SS Daniel Lebron, Amherst, freshman This player bats third and is stout defensively, Amherst coach Jordan McCarthy said.

Right now, he is a defensive wizard and a contact machine.

Lebron led the team in hits and has the potential to become a star.

2B Kody Lesser, Lenox, eighth grade Lesser was batting .300 since moving to the middle of the Millionaires lineup while adding stolen bases and helping keep Lenox strong up the middle defensively.

Both (Kody Lesser and Mason Daley) have been in the utility role for our team and have moved wherever needed when asked and excelled in those positions, Lenox coach Bryan Maloy said.

2B Devin Lord, Bishop Stang, sophomore Lord was batting .342 with three doubles, one triple, nine RBIs, eight runs and six stolen bases.

Devin is a staple at second base and will play shortstop next season, Bishop Stang coach Brian Rose said.

One of the strongest arms in the league, his defensive play has been phenomenal.

SS Yaicol Ismael Martes Guzman, New Mission, sophomore Yaicol is a right-handed power pitcher who can overwhelm batters with his velocity and change in location, New Mission coach Joe Bartolomeo said.

When not pitching, Martes Guzman was the switch-hitting starting shortstop who hits for great power from the left side.

He had one home run, two triples, more than 10 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

2B Daviel Mateo, Ruth Batson Academy, junior Mateo has been outstanding at second base for the Eagles, committing zero errors while consistently making difficult plays and turning double plays with confidence and precision.

At the plate, he led the team with a .541 batting average, contributing 10 doubles and 21 stolen bases.

He has been a tremendous leader and consistent performer for our team all season, Ruth Batson Academy coach John Matthews said.

SS Christian McCarthy, St.

Johns Prep, senior McCarthy was recognized as varsity baseball most valuable player at the recent senior awards convocation.

The shortstop was batting .350 with 14 RBIs while providing solid defense.

Christian leads the team in RBIs, having a great senior season, St.

Johns Prep coach Dan Letarte said in May.

McCarthy plans to attend Clemson University.

2B Jadiel Mendez, New Mission, freshman Mendez is a smart and confident player who is extremely flexible in his role, demonstrating his love for the game.

The freshman got most of his starts at second base but also plays first and third base effectively, and he had pitched several innings in relief.

He had one triple and six RBIs.

He has a great mind for the game, and although he is young, many of the players look to him as a leader on the team, New Mission coach Joe Bartolomeo said.

SS Anthony Moura, Hudson, senior Moura was Hudsons leading hitter at .465 with a .540 on-base percentage, 20 hits, 15 RBIs, 11 runs and nine stolen bases.

On the mound, he was 4-1 with an 0.98 ERA.

He threw 10 and one-third innings against Nashoba in an 11-inning game.

Anthony is a senior captain and a true leader, Hudson coach Tim Reinhardt said.

He pitches and plays shortstop for us, and he is our No.

3 hitter.

SS Jake Notaro, Clinton, senior Nicknamed Nooch, Notaro is considered one of the top high school baseball players in Central Massachusetts.

He was a 2025 league all-star, Clinton coach Tom Santasania said.

Jake is 3-0 on the mound, and he leads the team in batting average.

2B Mike Obremski, Bishop Fenwick, junior The junior was batting .290 with a .501 on-base percentage while competing hard and staying positive.

Mike is one of the most reliable guys on the team and someone teammates trust, Crusaders coach James Reiling said.

He competes hard, stays positive and consistently puts the team ahead of himself.

SS Liam OConnor, Sci-Tech, sophomore After spending significant time behind the plate last year, OConnor transitioned smoothly to leading Sci-Techs defensive charge at shortstop.

He made important relief pitching appearances, including a relief win against Smith Academy.

The sophomore has a strong presence at the plate and on the bases, recording several walks and stolen bases.

Liam has stepped up big-time in the shortstop position for us this year, Sci-Tech coach Casey McKenzie said.

2B Justin Oliveira, Bristol Plymouth, senior Oliveira had two stolen bases and a clutch RBI in a win over Southeastern RVT.

Justin tries his best and plays hard and is a good teammate, Bristol Plymouth coach Keith Powers said.

2B Connor Oliver, Falmouth, senior One of five senior captains, the Merrimack College-bound senior has great leadership qualities and a knack for motivating his teammates.

Hes willing to do whatever it takes to win, including laying down sacrifice bunts to move runners along, and he can turn two with the best of them.

This kid is one of the best defensive second basemen on Cape Cod; he makes every play with great range and mobility, Falmouth coach Josh Oliver said.

2B Zach Otis, Grafton, senior The Framingham State commit was batting .333 through May 7 with nine hits in 27 at-bats, including two doubles, one triple, six RBIs and 10 runs from the nine-hole in the lineup.

Catcher converted to middle infielder; undersized but swings a big bat, Grafton coach Brian Andersen said.

2B Timothy OToole, Waltham, senior OToole, a team captain, earned high praise from his coach.

Timmy is a gamer, highly intense (sometimes to a fault), he is a gold glove-caliber second baseman, hes got the best hands on our team and has been steady at the plate, hitting over .400, Waltham coach Larry Scafidi said.

SS Jack Pitro, West Boylston, sophomore Pitro was in contention for most valuable player of Midland-Wachusett D, batting over .400 with a home run, four doubles and solid defense with highlight-reel plays.

Only a sophomore, Jack is one of the best hitters in the state and plays a smooth shortstop, West Boylston coach Tyler Forbes said.

He does things right and is consistently successful, whether at the dish or in the field.

SS Nolan Rappoli, Xaverian Brothers, senior A 6-foot-1, 190-pound Foxborough native, Rappoli is a Harvard baseball commit.

Team co-captain, three-year starter, Xaverian Brothers coach Gerry Lambert said.

Great leadership.

Hits the ball hard.

Great hands, good arm.

SS Omarlyn Sanchez, Ruth Batson Academy, eighth grade The eighth-grader had not committed a single error all season, consistently making difficult plays look routine, and he was exceptional at turning double plays.

At the plate, he was batting .513 with two home runs, 10 RBIs and 27 stolen bases.

He was also the teams top pitcher with a 3-2 record, two saves, a 3.00 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 24 innings.

Our shortstop has been one of the top all-around players in the league this season, excelling both offensively and defensively, Ruth Batson Academy coach John Matthews said.

SS Conor Secrist, Saint Johns, senior The team captain and United States Naval Academy commit was batting .320 with 16 hits, three doubles, one home run, 12 RBIs and 16 runs.

Secrist always puts the team ahead of himself and is Mr.

Clutch, showing his ability to come through in big moments at the plate and in the field.

A leader on and off the field who has been a member of the varsity team since he was a freshman, including being a starter for three years, Saint Johns coach Casey Cummins said.

2B Alex Silver, West Boylston, sophomore Silver belted a home run and collected two hits as the Lions downed visiting Tahanto 8-2 on May 20.

Alex is tough as nails, West Boylston coach Tyler Forbes said.

A great hockey player who has really made himself at home playing second base for us.

SS Brian Silvester, Clinton, senior Team co-most valuable player in 2025, Silvester was also a standout basketball player for the Gaels.

Brian is committed to Bentley University, Clinton coach Tom Santasania said.

Nine high school one-hitters, two no-hitters and 250 strikeouts in high school.

2B Ryan Stannard, Pittsfield, junior The junior has been clutch in runners-in-scoring-position situations, batting .241 with a .385 on-base percentage and a .729 on-base plus slugging.

He had three doubles, 10 RBIs, 10 runs and four stolen bases, and he played lock-down defense.

He is having a solid year and is a player to watch; he has innate baseball instincts with a high baseball IQ, Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said.

SS Jack Tamburro, Waltham, junior Tamburro went 3 for 4 with a triple, two RBIs and one run in a victory over Concord-Carlisle, giving him a high school high for hits in a game.

Jack is a steady shortstop who is just beginning to show his hitting improvement, Waltham coach Larry Scafidi said.

SS Gabe Terlato, Saint Johns, senior The Stevens Institute of Technology commit stepped into different roles two years in a row and delivered.

Gabe is the kind of player every team needs, Saint Johns coach Casey Cummins said.

Hes always willing to do whatever helps the team win and is one of the smoothest infielders youll see he makes the game look easy.

Terlato was batting .278 with 15 hits, six RBIs, 13 runs and 10 stolen bases this season.

SS Henry VanFaasen, Bishop Fenwick, junior Henry brings a lot of intensity and passion to the field, and his teammates respond to that, Bishop Fenwick coach James Reiling said.

Hes a hard worker who continues to improve and sets a strong example with his attitude and effort.

SS Nate Vitarisi, Reading Memorial, senior Vitarisi was considered Reading Memorials best all-around player.

Through 13 games, he had 13 hits in 41 at-bats with one double, five walks, seven RBIs, seven stolen bases and 13 runs for a .317 batting average.

Nate is a three-year starter, Reading Memorial coach Dave Blanchard said.

Team captain.

Excellent overall athlete with exceptional leadership skills.

Vitarisi is also a standout defenseman for the Rockets ice hockey team.

2B Matt Volpe, Hingham, junior Volpe had two hits and a clutch RBI in a win over Silver Lake.

The junior combined with teammate Colin Garrity for a no-hitter against top-seeded Duxbury late in the 2025 season.

He is short in stature, but you could argue he is the one who gets his teammates to follow his lead, Hingham coach Nick DeVito said.

He is an exceptional defensive second baseman as good as it gets at the high school level.

SS Owen Waddell, Hamilton Wenham Regional, senior Waddell works through the ball well with a strong arm and great feet turning the double play.

The Miami University (Ohio) commit was batting .420 with 21 hits and 18 RBIs, and he is a great pitcher with a three-quarters delivery, mid-80s velocity with three pitches and strong command.

He was 4-0 with one save, an 0.98 ERA, 40 strikeouts and seven walks.

Captain and smoothest shortstop in program history, Hamilton Wenham Regional coach Reggie Maidment said.

He is 6-foot-3, so he covers a lot of ground.

2B Jack Walker, Longmeadow, freshman The freshman led the Lancers in hits and RBIs while playing second base, shortstop and left field.

Jack has been a big newcomer in our lineup, Longmeadow coach Ryan Blain said.

He is hitting .351 with 13 hits and two extra-base hits.

SS David Wildgoose, Pittsfield, senior A National Honor Society member who plans to attend North Carolina State University, Wildgoose was batting .345 with a .500 on-base percentage and .948 on-base plus slugging.

The senior had three doubles, 11 RBIs and four stolen bases.

He is a student of the game, and he made himself an exceptional player, Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said.

He is a hard-working student-athlete who gets it done on the field and in the classroom.

SS Brock Winslow, Bishop Stang, senior Winslow was a top-of-the-lineup hitter and catalyst for the Spartans offense.

The senior was batting .400 with 16 hits in 40 at-bats, five doubles, one triple, two home runs, 16 RBIs, 16 runs and 10 stolen bases.

Hes the all-time runs leader and stolen bases leader for Bishop Stang.

Brock is a four-year starter and Massachusetts Maritime Academy commit to play football and baseball, Bishop Stang coach Brian Rose said.
