Maryland vs Rutgers: Staff Predictions for Big Ten Bottom-Battle

When two struggling teams meet on the gridiron and few are watching, does the outcome still matter? In the standings, yes, and the result could influence the job security of one of the head coaches. Mike Locksley's 2-4 Maryland Terrapins will host Greg Schiano's 1-4 Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday at 12:30 PM. This Big Ten clash represents either a final opportunity to salvage the season for one of these programs or another sign that a coaching change may be on the horizon.

So who will emerge victorious in this battle to avoid the basement? The writers at Maryland On SI offer their predictions:

Mike O: Maryland 27, Rutgers 20

Terrapins fans should brace for one last highlight this season. Despite a rough month, Maryland appears, at least on paper, to be the more cohesive team compared to Rutgers. The Terps have settled on a single quarterback, boast a true No. 1 receiver, and feature a dynamic pass-rushing duo. Rutgers, on the other hand, can only claim one of those three assets in K.J. Duff, who has recorded three games with over 100 receiving yards. That could create matchup problems depending on the health of Maryland's cornerbacks, but with the running game finding its footing, the home team should hold the offensive edge. The Homecoming crowd, though sparse, will leave SECU Stadium somewhat satisfied—perhaps reminiscent of Locksley's first win as interim coach in 2015. And like that season, a new coach may be on the way soon, possibly after the bye week.

Jaden G: Maryland 31, Rutgers 23

Will a win turn the tide for either program? Regardless of the outcome, the victor will secure a much-needed win. Mike Locksley is already on the hot seat despite the narrative from College Park; he cannot afford a loss to Rutgers, which also struggles in the Big Ten. In my view, Saturday's game will hinge on the ground attack; Rutgers' defense allows nearly 200 rushing yards per game. DeJuan Williams had a quiet outing last week against Ohio State, and he'll be counted on to find and exploit running lanes. Iverson Howard could also see carries. The Scarlet Knights' leading linebacker, Antwan Raymond, is questionable for Saturday. Raymond has three 100+ rushing-yard games, which puts additional pressure on KJ Duff to lead the passing attack.

Mike C: Maryland 31, Rutgers 21

Maryland's projected win stems from how well their strengths align with Rutgers' biggest structural weaknesses. Rutgers' defense has been porous all season, surrendering 37+ points to every competent offense they've faced, and their vulnerabilities match exactly where Maryland excels: layered route concepts, slot production, and explosive plays off RPOs and vertical shots. Even when Maryland has struggled, its offense has been more stable than Rutgers', showing better early-down efficiency, stronger drive sustainability, a more balanced run-pass profile, and—outside of the UCLA loss—far fewer turnover-inducing mistakes. Rutgers, meanwhile, relies heavily on splash plays and rarely sustains rhythm across four quarters. The turnover margin widens the gap: Maryland sits at +2 while Rutgers is at -4, and those giveaways often arrive in high-leverage moments that swing close games. Combined, Maryland's offensive consistency, Rutgers' defensive flaws, and the turnover profile point toward a matchup where Maryland steadily pulls away, delivering a two-score victory.
