The Miami Marlins have officially picked up the $21 million team option on ace pitcher Sandy Alcantara's contract for the 2027 season, the organization revealed on Friday. The move ensures the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner remains with the club for at least one more year.
Alcantara, who signed a five-year, $56 million extension with Miami in 2022, had a $2 million buyout clause for 2027 that the team opted not to trigger. The 31-year-old right-hander is coming off a 2026 campaign in which he posted a 13-11 record with a 3.87 ERA over 36 appearances, tying for the National League lead with 33 starts. He also led all of Major League Baseball with 214 innings pitched.
Key Analysis
Despite persistent trade rumors in recent seasons, Alcantara has remained a cornerstone for the Marlins. As the longest-tenured player on the roster, he set several franchise records in 2026, including career marks for innings pitched, strikeouts, and starts. Over his 10-year career, the veteran has compiled a 65-78 record with a 3.69 ERA across 213 appearances, including 202 starts for Miami since 2017.
