Marcus Smart Reveals Why Lakers Let Him Walk: 'They Wanted to Go Younger'

After a bounce-back season with the Los Angeles Lakers, veteran guard Marcus Smart has opened up about the team's decision to part ways with him. Smart, who inked a modest deal with the Lakers last season, revitalized his career by playing an aggressive style alongside LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and Luka Doncic. However, both sides ultimately chose to go in different directions this summer.

Smart subsequently signed with the Houston Rockets on a two-year, $13 million contract that includes a player option for the second year, as reported by ESPN's Shams Charania. The agreement was finalized Wednesday morning, with Smart's agents, Jason Glushon and Josh Ketroser, notifying Rockets officials.

The 30-year-old guard has been candid about his departure from Los Angeles. He initially expressed dissatisfaction with the offers the Lakers presented, stating, "First off, I played so well that the offer that was ultimately given didn't match the way that I played. Especially when you see guys who played way worse than I did, the offers they're getting. And then it wasn't any security that we wanted that they were willing to do."

More recently, Smart elaborated on the situation, revealing that the Lakers' desire to get younger was a key factor. "I thought I played well enough to at least be offered a decent deal to return but no they wanted to go in a different direction. They wanted to go younger and that's what they did," he said.

Based on Smart's comments, it appears the Lakers attempted to retain him on a team-friendly contract, but he was not interested. By that point, both parties had moved on, allowing Los Angeles to focus on developing younger talent.

Key Analysis

Smart now joins a Houston Rockets squad featuring Kevin Durant and other stars, where his defensive tenacity should align well with the team's philosophy under head coach Ime Udoka. The Rockets, who pride themselves on defense, appear to be an ideal fit for Smart's skill set. His departure from Los Angeles highlights the Lakers' strategic shift toward youth, while Smart's addition brings veteran leadership and defensive prowess to a Houston team aiming to contend.
