Evgeni Malkin's subdued demeanor during Tuesday night's game drew notice on social media, and the reason became clearer on Wednesday when the Penguins announced he would miss practice due to illness. Malkin barely reacted after scoring a goal and did not come out of the tunnel for his customary lap when named one of the game's three stars.
Forward Egor Chinakhov was also absent from Wednesday's session, as he continues to deal with a minor injury that has kept him in and out of the lineup over the past week.
Practice itself held some intrigue, as the Penguins skated in blue pants and helmets to test out their gear before the Hometown Remix alternate jerseys make their debut on November 3 at home against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Jersey Tease and Speculation
Earlier in the week, the Penguins joined all other NHL teams in teasing their upcoming alternate jerseys. The teaser text is believed to be a Caesar cipher message reading: "What's old is new."
Conflicting images have circulated on social media. One concept, inspired by Andy Warhol, appears too avant-garde for an actual NHL jersey. Another rumored design features a retro logo of the "fat Penguin" crest used during the team's inaugural 1967-68 season. That design seems more plausible, especially since the team is reportedly already selling the logo on a hat in its store. Returning to the first logo would align with the "What's old is new" messaging.
Whether an official reveal occurs beforehand or not, the Penguins will wear blue jerseys for the first time since 2013. They are scheduled to wear the Hometown Remix jerseys ten times this season, starting on November 3.
