LSU Lands Five-Star Point Guard Reese Alston Despite Father's Controversial Objections

With the 2026-27 season just days away, the LSU Tigers men's basketball program has been primarily focused on finalizing its roster. Nevertheless, head coach Will Wade and his staff have continued to achieve success on the recruiting trail.

On Thursday, the Tigers received a significant verbal commitment from five-star point guard Reese Alston, the No. 1 overall player in Texas for the 2027 class. Alston joins four-star prospects Ahmad Hudson and King Gibson, giving LSU three pledges in the cycle. The son of former NBA player Rafer Alston, Reese chose LSU over other programs with more recent championship success, buying into Wade's vision for the team.

Despite his son's decision, Rafer Alston has made his feelings about Wade abundantly clear. In an interview with Z Smart Hoops, the elder Alston did not mince words, labeling Wade a 'sleazeball of an individual' and stating, 'Will Wade has operated in a disgusting manner.' He also alleged, 'I know there was a back alley deal involving PUMA, in which money was accepted without my authorization.'

Such public criticism from the father of a top recruit is unusual, especially given Rafer Alston's NBA background. Nonetheless, Reese made his own choice, independent of his father's opinion.

Key Analysis

While LSU's 2026-27 roster is filled with players who will likely exhaust their eligibility after one year, Alston's arrival could attract other talented prospects to Baton Rouge in future offseasons. Alston may only spend one year at LSU before entering the NBA draft, but if he fulfills his potential as a one-and-done talent, other players nationwide may be drawn to join the Tigers to compete for a national championship alongside one of college basketball's brightest young stars. That prospect is worth monitoring as the 2027-28 season approaches, when Alston is expected on campus.
