The Detroit Lions are poised to reinforce their linebacker corps after Jack Campbell sustained a concerning neck injury, with the team reportedly set to add Owen Pappoe to the practice squad, contingent on a physical, according to CBS Sports.
Campbell was immobilized on a backboard and transported to a hospital after the injury occurred during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. While the linebacker has shown signs of improvement, no definitive return timeline has been established.
Pappoe, 26, is being brought in to provide additional depth and experience for a Lions squad dealing with multiple injuries at the position. The former Auburn captain was a fifth-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2023 NFL Draft and appeared in all 17 games last season, recording 27 tackles and two pass deflections. However, Arizona released him during final roster cuts despite him entering the last year of his four-year contract.
He was subsequently claimed by the Tennessee Titans but was released last month before visiting Detroit on Tuesday. His addition would also give the Lions another special teams option as they navigate a challenging injury crisis.
Detroit also lost linebacker Jimmy Rolder, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a season-ending hamstring injury. Despite these setbacks, head coach Dan Campbell remains confident in the team's depth.
Campbell said: "Luckily we have some depth in there with [Malcolm Rodriguez] and Nowaske and Barnes. Those three guys and Amen [Ogbongbemiga]'s been up for us, which is good. And then we've got Bachie ready to roll. So, we may need a little bit of help. We're looking at everything. We'll adjust as we go. Brad [Holmes] and I will get together here this afternoon, tomorrow and figure some of this out."
The Lions will now hope for Campbell's continued recovery while seeking to strengthen their defensive options for the remainder of the season.
