Lincoln Riley Praises Jayden Maiava's Poise in USC's Road Win Over Penn State

Throughout his USC career, quarterback Jayden Maiava had struggled when playing away from the Coliseum. However, in Week 6 against Penn State, he flipped that narrative with his finest road outing as a Trojan.

Facing a raucous crowd of 114,419 at Beaver Stadium, Maiava completed 21 of 33 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns, crucially avoiding any turnovers. USC remains undefeated in his career when he does not throw an interception, boasting an 11-0 record, and they are 14-1 when he completes over 61 percent of his passes.

Maiava's display in Happy Valley resembled that of a seasoned veteran with nearly 40 collegiate starts. The intense atmosphere did not rattle him, and he consistently made plays that quieted the roaring fans. Head coach Lincoln Riley lauded his quarterback's demeanor: "Thought he was poised, confident. I think he was very locked into how we wanted to attack them and I thought he stayed really steady throughout the entire game. I thought he handled it well. He played one of his best games for certain. Just really proud of his poise. There was just kind of a calmness with him and there was energy but he was just very calm throughout the entire game."

Key Analysis

Southern Cal enters its first bye week at 6-1, still in control of its College Football Playoff destiny. If the Trojans are to make a postseason run, Maiava's performance against the Nittany Lions could be the catalyst. The return of star freshman receiver Trent Mosley, who had been sidelined for three games with an injury, provided an immediate boost. Maiava connected with Mosley for a touchdown on the opening drive, and the Santa Margarita (Calif.) product finished with nine receptions for 111 yards, picking up right where he left off.

Another former Trinity League standout, Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, has also made an instant impact at receiver. Dixon-Wyatt caught a touchdown from Maiava early in the fourth quarter to put the Trojans up by eight. Together, Mosley and Dixon-Wyatt have thrived as the team's top two receivers, underscoring the importance of USC recruiting California at the highest level. Their chemistry with Maiava began immediately upon their arrival in January, and with half a season under their belts, their potential is limitless. Maiava's emphasis on accelerating their development in the offseason has paid dividends in the fall.

Help is also on the way with star freshman tight end Mark Bowman, who has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, expected back soon. Sophomore receiver Tanook Hines has rediscovered his rhythm in the offense after a slow start. For Maiava, consistency will be key down the stretch. The schedule toughens with games against Ohio State, Indiana, and UCLA, and the stakes and pressure will only intensify. The next two months will not only shape the Trojans' playoff hopes but also Maiava's draft stock. Earlier this season, Maiava expressed his desire to be mentioned among the USC greats, and with five games remaining, he has the opportunity to do just that.
