CHICAGO (AP) — Artyom Levshunov found the back of the net 1:37 into overtime, propelling the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. The victory was highlighted by Patrick Kane's historic achievement, as he became the NHL's all-time leader in assists by a U.S.-born player.
Connor Bedard, playing in just his second game after missing the first six with a shoulder injury, scored his first goal of the season on the power play. Frank Nazar and Ryan Donato also tallied for Chicago, while Bedard chipped in with an assist.
Kane, who earlier in the first period notched his 895th career assist to surpass Phil Housley's record, was instrumental in the game-winner. He carried the puck into the Jets' zone and dished to Bedard, who quickly fed Levshunov. The young defenseman skated a few strides up the middle and ripped a shot past goaltender Stuart Skinner on the glove side.
The winning sequence came roughly 40 seconds after Blackhawks netminder Spencer Knight denied Neal Pionk's bid to convert Mark Scheifele's cross-ice pass on a two-on-one rush with a sprawling left-pad save. Knight finished the night with 31 saves.
Pionk contributed a goal and two assists for Winnipeg. Kyle Connor scored on the power play, and Alex Iafallo also found the net. Connor extended his point streak to four games, accumulating five goals and one assist over that span. Skinner made 24 saves in the losing effort.
Iafallo's goal, which tied the game at 3 just 5:39 into the third period, came when Pionk's point shot deflected in off Iafallo's shin at the right side of the net. It marked Pionk's eighth career three-point game.
Entering the contest, the Jets had dominated the recent series, going 8-1-1 in their previous 10 meetings against Chicago, with the only loss a 2-0 shutout in Chicago on Jan. 19.
Next up, the Jets host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, while the Blackhawks welcome the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.
