Letter to the editor: Penguins’ trades

When watching those mock NHL trades online, having the Pens giving up three major assets for one top goal-scorer like a fireworks deal, my Rick DiPietro alarm goes off.

DiPietro signed a 15-year, $67.5 million contract with the Islanders in 2006.

His constant injuries kept him off the ice and the Isles investment was up in smoke.

Kyle Dubas and Dan Muse brought balanced scoring and plug-in trades, improving the teams performance.

Now we are looking at subtracting from one of the NHLs top lines, signing a new player to an expensive long-term contract, destroying the balance with one serious injury away from missing the playoffs.

If Dubas could trade five AHL players for Elias Pettersson or Eric Robinson like the Pens did trading Jaromir Jagr to the Capitals, then do it.

Bill Zonnon, Will Horcoff or Ben Kindel may soon produce at high levels.

The Ruck twins may be the Pittsburgh Penguins version of Frank and Pete Mahovlich, who won Stanley Cups with the Canadiens in 1971 and 1973.

Dont light the fuse on a big trade that could easily fizzle.
