LeBron James Impresses in 76ers Preseason Debut Against Nets

In his first appearance wearing a Philadelphia 76ers uniform, LeBron James tallied 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds during the first half of a preseason matchup with the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in New York. The 41-year-old forward, who is entering his NBA-record 24th season after signing a two-year minimum deal with Philadelphia this summer, logged 18 minutes and helped the 76ers take a 58-56 advantage into the break.

James, who spent the previous eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, was credited with just one field-goal attempt but drew four fouls and converted all eight of his free throws. He did not attempt a shot until he was fouled on a drive with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter. Despite his limited shot volume, James's playmaking was on full display, as he repeatedly set up teammates. "He's a great, great passer, and that was certainly on display tonight," said 76ers head coach Nick Nurse. James ranks fourth on the NBA's all-time assists list with over 12,000.

The 76ers gave fans a glimpse of their revamped lineup, starting James and fellow All-Star newcomer Jaylen Brown alongside returning players Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. The group stumbled initially when James threw a low pass to Embiid, who caught it awkwardly and airballed a turnaround jumper. However, Philadelphia then made its next seven shots, with James finding open men or, on one possession, slipping a pass to Embiid, who quickly moved it to Brown for a dunk. Nurse aimed to play his starters about half the game, though Embiid, Brown, and Edgecombe began the second half on the floor. Most of them had sat out Monday's preseason-opening win over the New York Knicks.

Adjusting to his new environment, James seemed at ease in the locker room, turning up the music after a pregame workout. His blue 76ers jersey lay folded on the floor next to his chair. "Obviously, I have my routine, but when you go through an offseason, you've got to remember what your routine was again, no matter how many, how long you've been in it," James said. "So, just thinking about, like, which buses do I remember taking, you know? What was my routine when I got over to the arena? How do I get ready for the game and things of that nature. So all that stuff plays a part. So I'm still getting into the whole everything, on the court and off the court, living and also being around these guys every day. It's a lot of adjustment for me, but, every day we'll get better and better."

James acknowledged the novelty of his debut but emphasized that the game itself remains unchanged. "Obviously, I was wearing a new uniform, but the game is the game, and the game is needed to be played on the floor," he said. "And I was happy to be able to log some minutes with the guys that we've been going at each other in practice for the last two weeks, a week and a half, or whatever the case may be."

Philadelphia has two preseason games remaining, both against the Boston Celtics, the team that traded Brown to the 76ers shortly before James signed. The 76ers will open the regular season on October 20 in New York, where the Knicks will raise a banner celebrating their NBA championship.

Key Analysis

James's debut offered a promising preview of Philadelphia's new core, even if his scoring was limited. His ability to facilitate for Embiid, Brown, and Maxey could make the 76ers one of the league's most dangerous offensive teams. With ample firepower around him, James may not need to shoulder a heavy scoring load, allowing him to focus on playmaking and leadership. The preseason matchup also highlighted the chemistry that still needs to develop, but the early returns suggest a seamless fit for the future Hall of Famer.
