Rui Hachumira is coming off an impressive 2025-26 campaign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Gonzaga product averaged 11.5 points per game while shooting 51.4% from the field and 44.3% from beyond the arc during the regular season.
Things only got better for the red-hot sharpshooter in the playoffs, as he finished third in scoring (17.5 points) and first in three-point shooting efficiency (54.9%).
After the Lakers second-round playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, there was early speculation that the franchise would let Hachimura walk during free agency and prioritize other assets.
Los Angeles ultimately did just that, but considered a Hachimura-centered sign-and-trade to help them land valuable assets in return for their three-point-oriented stud before he signed a multi-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Given that the Clippers' offer was highly disrespectful, it makes sense that they chose to reject it.
Hachimura and his agent Darren Matsubara of The Team came to an understanding with the Los Angeles Clippers early in free agency on finding a deal together, ESPNs Shams Charania reported Monday.
The sides waited for the Los Angeles Lakers to complete their offseason business to pursue a sign-and-trade, but the Lakers didnt cooperate on one, according to a source close to Hachimura.
Instead, the Clippers and Hachimura moved forward to keep him in his desired location of Los Angeles.
The Lakers and Clippers had a discussion around a Hachimura sign-and-trade, but the Clippers offered minimal cash as the Lakers expected draft capital in a potential return, sources said.
Considering Hachimura proved to be a high-caliber perimeter shooting weapon in a large market franchise, its a bit perplexing that the Clippers could provide the Lakers with the valuable draft capital they were seeking.
In other words, the former first-round picks value is higher than its ever been, which should have guaranteed the Lakers a lucrative sign-and-trade offer from the other Los Angeles-based NBA organization.
It didnt happen, though, leaving the Lakers no choice but to relinquish Hachimura for free.
