Lakers Face Roster Deadline: Who Will Be the Odd Man Out?

As the NBA preseason wraps up, the Los Angeles Lakers are not only fine-tuning their starting lineup and rotation but also confronting a pressing roster issue. The team must soon resolve how to comply with league rules that cap regular-season rosters at 15 players, a challenge they've faced since assembling the squad in July.

With 16 players holding guaranteed contracts, the Lakers have been over the limit throughout training camp. "Going from 16 guys to 15 guys, we have until Opening Night for the competition to sort of play out and see who the best 15 players are," said Rob Pelinka, Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager, in late September. He also mentioned that consolidation trades—trading two players for one—remain a possibility, with a resolution expected before the team faces the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers will play their final exhibition game against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night at Crypto.com Arena, after which they must make their final decision. League expectations suggest that either Dalton Knecht or Jaden Hardy could be the odd men out. The Lakers have explored trades involving both players, but as of the final preseason game, no deal had gained traction. If the team opts to waive a player instead of trading, league personnel anticipate Knecht being the one let go.

However, no decision has been finalized, leaving room for alternative outcomes. While the Lakers, like all NBA teams, have until 2 p.m. PT on Monday to set their Opening Night roster, the regular season begins on Tuesday, and the Lakers host the Warriors on Wednesday. The resolution could come as early as this week.

Hardy, who was acquired from the Washington Wizards in July in the trade that sent Deandre Ayton to Washington, spoke about the looming roster decision after Friday morning's shootaround. "For me, I just came here [with] a clear head, clear-minded, new situation," Hardy said. "New opportunity. It's a blessing to be here." When asked if he felt anxiety about the roster crunch, Hardy replied, "Nah, I mean, it's in Gods hands. I'm blessed to be here."

Key Analysis

The Lakers' roster crunch is a common challenge for teams with deep talent, but the impending decision carries significant implications for team chemistry and future flexibility. With the regular season fast approaching, management must balance immediate performance with long-term strategic goals. The outcome will not only shape the Lakers' lineup but also signal their priorities for the season ahead.
