Kyle Filipowski's Vanishing Act: Why the Jazz Big Man Is Barely Playing

The Utah Jazz's handling of Kyle Filipowski has become a growing talking point early in the 2026-27 NBA season. Through the team's first eight games, head coach Will Hardy has made numerous rotation choices that have drawn both praise and criticism, but Filipowski's diminished role stands out as one of the more puzzling developments.

Last season, Filipowski was a regular fixture in the Jazz rotation, starting over 40 games and logging more than 23 minutes per night. However, the anticipated third-year leap has not materialized. Instead, the forward has been active for just five of Utah's first eight contests, averaging fewer than eight minutes per game. In that limited action, he has contributed just 1.8 points on 30.0% shooting from the field, along with 0.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.

Possible Explanations for the Reduced Role

Two primary possibilities have emerged to explain Filipowski's sudden drop in playing time. First, the 22-year-old underwent back surgery this offseason to repair a herniated disc that he played through during the entire previous campaign. Although he missed multiple preseason games, he was ready for the regular season opener. There is a chance that lingering effects from the surgery are still limiting him, but he has not appeared on the injury report at any point during the regular season. If his back were still causing issues severe enough to restrict his availability, the team would likely report it.

That leaves the second possibility: Filipowski's reduced role may be a deliberate coaching decision. Even with the Jazz currently lacking frontcourt depth due to the absences of Jusuf Nurkic and Jaren Jackson Jr., Filipowski's playing style and limited defensive versatility may not align with Utah's game plan. Alternatively, he may not have met the coaching staff's standards in practice or during his limited game minutes.

As the season progresses, more clarity should emerge regarding why Filipowski has been phased out of the rotation. The answer could be injury-related, performance-based, or a combination of both. If his lack of playing time proves to be a long-term trend, it would mark a disappointing turn for the Jazz's 2024 draft class.
