Morris isnt whispering sweet nothings to defensive backs, but he sure seems to have boasted good secondaries everywhere he goes.Is that just because he inherits great talent, or is he doing something different, something special? Niners training camp is in its early days, and boy, theres a lot of stuff happening with this team, but I also think were starting to see the manifestation of Morris methods for maximizing talent on the back-end.
Renardo Green has all the physical tools to be an elite, lock-down corner in this league.Hes also got a habit of floating into the ether mid-game, forgetting plays, assignments, or just taking off reps.
Hes a coaster.
And before he reached the NFL, his talent allowed that to be an acceptable way to play.
We saw the boiling point in Seattle last January when Shanahan nearly popped a blood vessel screaming at Green on the sideline after pulling him from the game.
But in 2026, with Morris installing five-man fronts that leave corners stranded on island coverage, Green cant just be an athletic hypothesis anymore.
Last year, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh wanted to run some of the things Morris plans on running this season.That plan was abandoned because of injuries, yes, but also, to a degree, because Green couldnt be trusted to be the linchpin of the defensive secondary in complicated man-match zone tactics.
Morris finding a way to unlock Green is one of the most important stories for the Niners this season.

The Niners signed Jones to a dirt-cheap $1.2 million contract that accounts for less than half a percent of the salary cap.If the Niners cut Jones tomorrow, the accounting department wouldnt even notice until mid-September.
But his mere presence in Santa Clara has clearly lit a fire under Greens rear end.
For the first time since he became a starter on the cornerback depth chart, Green isnt entitled to his gig just because of his draft pedigree.Suddenly, in early training camp practices, Green is punching at footballs and getting physical with receivers even Mike Evans in routine 11-on-11 drills.
The NFL loves to market itself as a ruthless meritocracy, but thats mostly corporate propaganda.
Usually, draft capital and money dictate playing time, with ties going to the expensive guy, and hand-picked players getting the benefits of the doubt from coaches.
Morris doesnt care about any of that stuff because he didnt build this roster.He inherited a defense assembled, in large part, by Saleh, meaning he has zero emotional attachment to anyones high-round draft stock.
For him, the best player will get the job.
Green, Jones, even veteran Eli Apple, who might be keeping Jones in line with strong early play no one should doubt for a second that any of the three could start opposite Deommodore Lenoir against the Rams in Australia Sept.
11.And if you look back on Morris career, a pattern of creating the right environment to bring out the best in secondary players shows itself.
But its not a problem for Morris its a feature, not a bug.
That said, its an existential crisis for a third-year corner who thought his spot was secured.
This might just be what Morris from previous Niners defensive coordinators.Saleh built a cozy family system he had so much say with the defensive roster, particularly before last season, that his ego was too intertwined with player usage.
Steve Wilks, on the other hand, was in a competition of himself against the world.
Nick Sorensen? Well, he just felt like an exercise in the Peter Principle.Morris creates chaotic, high-stakes environments that forces players to sink or swim.
He isnt fixing technique with a chalkboard epiphany, though hes no slouch at the Xs and Os, either.
No, hes fixing focus issues with a cheap, aggressive mercenary.Every single day he is showing up in a big way, Morris said of Green.
Now its time to go out there and do it.
Its early August, and camp hype always sizzles in the summer sun before it burns out.
Greens newfound intensity could merely be an early flash that vanishes by August, much less September.But if Morris actually turns a hypothetical, unquestionably inconsistent talent into a lockdown corner by hiring the right chaos agent to stand behind him, that wont be an accomplishment that should be discussed in whispers.
