Knicks Cut Bruce Brown, Keep James Wiseman for Title Defense

The New York Knicks, reigning NBA champions, have decided to part ways with veteran guard Bruce Brown just before their 2026-27 regular-season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. ESPN's Shams Charania reported Saturday via X (formerly Twitter) that New York waived Brown while keeping former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman on the regular-season roster. Wiseman is slated to serve as a reserve center for the Knicks.

Brown, 30, had signed an Exhibit 9 contract with New York in mid-September, which allowed the organization to evaluate him during training camp and the preseason. The veteran guard previously played a key role in helping the Denver Nuggets secure their first championship in 2023, earning a reputation as a versatile contributor who offers defense, playmaking, and experience off the bench.

However, the Knicks' limited financial flexibility complicated their roster decisions leading into the regular season. Brown recently addressed the challenges veteran players face under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, particularly those seeking contracts below the maximum salary tier. "I'm sure there is (frustration). The new CBA is good for max guys, new free agents and rookie extension guys. The middle guys, it kind of sucks for us. There's not a lot of people getting that full mid-level," Brown said, via SNY Knicks on X. "But that's just the way it is right now."

Key Analysis

The decision to waive Brown underscores the Knicks' prioritization of frontcourt depth as they prepare to defend their title. Wiseman's inclusion provides additional size and insurance in the paint, while Brown's exit highlights the tough choices teams face under the second apron. New York opens its title defense on Tuesday, Oct. 20, against the 76ers at Madison Square Garden, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. ET on NBC.
