Kirk Herbstreit Weighs In: Controversial Calls in Georgia-Alabama Game Raise Questions

In the aftermath of Alabama's narrow 20-17 defeat to Georgia, discussions have centered not only on the play but also on the officiating. While fans of losing teams often point fingers at referees, in this case, the Crimson Tide may have legitimate grievances. The highly anticipated matchup between two top-tier programs was overshadowed by questionable calls that left many, including analyst Kirk Herbstreit, scrutinizing the decisions.

On his Nonstop podcast, Herbstreit addressed the controversy head-on. He began by crediting Georgia: "I thought Georgia played the game, they deserved to win the game, I have no problem with Georgia." However, he quickly turned to the contentious moments. "I'm just saying those two calls would have been big. Who knows what it would have done to the outcome, but those are two calls that were pretty significant that went against Alabama."

The Disputed Calls

The first controversial play occurred in the third quarter with the score tied at 17. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton appeared to throw an interception to Alabama linebacker QB Reece at the Bulldogs' 25-yard line. The play was initially ruled an interception, which would have given Alabama excellent field position. However, after instant replay review, the call was overturned to an incomplete pass. Although Georgia's drive ultimately ended in a missed field goal, the reversal allowed the Bulldogs to consume over six minutes of game clock and gain 70 yards, shifting momentum.

The second pivotal moment came late in the fourth quarter with 3:34 remaining. On a 2nd-and-10 from the Georgia 37-yard line, Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell targeted Ryan Coleman-Williams in the end zone. The pass was slightly short, forcing Coleman-Williams to adjust, and Georgia safety K.J. Bolden collided with him well before the ball arrived, knocking him down. No pass interference penalty was called, a decision that left many baffled.

Herbstreit, while not taking away from Georgia's victory, emphasized the impact of these calls. "I hope these two teams play again," he said later in the podcast. "Whether it's in Atlanta or hopefully even in the [College Football] Playoff."

Historical Context

Alabama and Georgia have a storied rivalry, with the Crimson Tide leading the all-time series 45-28-4. The two have frequently clashed in the SEC Championship Game, meeting five times (2012, 2018, 2021, 2023, and 2025), with Alabama holding a 4-1 edge, though Georgia won the most recent encounter. More notably, they have faced off twice in the national championship game, with Alabama winning in 2018 and Georgia triumphing in 2022. This latest chapter only adds to the intensity of their rivalry.
