Ketel Marte Trade: Insider Warns Diamondbacks of Major Hurdles

The Arizona Diamondbacks came close to securing a postseason berth in 2026, but fell just short, eliminating the need for a major roster shakeup. However, the team might be tempted to wonder what could have been, especially given the mysterious absence of slugging infielder Ketel Marte during a critical stretch.

Now, it appears the Diamondbacks are seriously considering trading Marte following a turbulent 2026 season. Yet, MLB insider Jim Bowden cautions that moving the 33-year-old won't be straightforward, primarily because of his no-trade clause.

"If he decides that he doesn't want to get traded, then he won't be," Bowden stated. "You gotta find a team that not only that he's willing to go to, but you gotta find a front office, a GM, a manager, and a group of players that are willing to accept all the things that come with Ketel Marte, which includes times where players, some teammates, have been disappointed that he didn't take the field."

Marte's unexplained absence occurred on August 17, when he was scratched from the lineup against the Boston Red Sox, leaving the organization stunned. He proceeded to miss 13 consecutive games during the team's playoff push, a stretch in which Arizona went 7-6.

Marte still has at least four years remaining on his contract, with $77.5 million in guaranteed money, plus an $11.5 million player option for 2031, when he'll be entering his age-37 season. His production has also declined, with his OPS dropping from .893 in 2025 to .748 in 2026. As a result, the Diamondbacks may need to absorb part of his contract to facilitate a trade, assuming he agrees to waive his no-trade clause.

Key Analysis

The Diamondbacks face a complex situation with Marte. His no-trade clause gives him significant leverage, and any interested team must be prepared to handle the baggage that comes with him. Additionally, his declining performance and hefty contract could force Arizona to include cash in a deal or accept a lesser return. The front office must weigh the benefits of moving on from Marte against the challenges of finding a suitable trade partner.
