Kentucky Basketball Opens Preseason at No. 23 in AP, Coaches Polls

The Kentucky men's basketball program will begin the 2026-27 season ranked No. 23 in both the Associated Press College Basketball Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll, which were released on Monday.

This marks the 59th occasion in 66 preseason AP polls that the Wildcats have been ranked to start a season, and the 61st time they have appeared in the initial coaches poll. Kentucky holds the all-time lead among all programs with 998 weekly AP poll appearances and 981 total selections in the coaches poll.

Nine opponents on Kentucky's 2026-27 schedule are ranked ahead of the Wildcats, including Florida (No. 1 in both polls), Texas (No. 7/7), Tennessee (No. 8/9), Virginia (No. 9/10), Louisville (No. 11/11), Arkansas (No. 12/13), Kansas (No. 17/18), Alabama (No. 20/18) and Vanderbilt (No. 24/21). The Wildcats will play a total of 11 regular-season games against these nine teams.

Kentucky will also face No. 19/16 Texas Tech in an exhibition game this Friday night. Additionally, five other opponents—Missouri, North Carolina, Indiana, Texas A&M and Auburn—are receiving votes to begin the season.

The Southeastern Conference leads the nation with seven teams ranked in the preseason polls, while Missouri and Texas A&M are just outside the top 25, receiving votes.

Key Analysis

Kentucky's No. 23 preseason ranking reflects a challenging schedule ahead, with nine ranked opponents and 11 regular-season matchups against those teams. The Wildcats' historical dominance in poll appearances—leading all programs in both AP and coaches poll selections—underscores the program's enduring prominence, even as they start the season outside the top 20.
