Karl-Anthony Towns Uncertain About Knicks Extension Before Season Opener

Karl-Anthony Towns addressed the media on Monday, stating that the likelihood of securing a contract extension with the New York Knicks before the regular season tips off appears slim. The Knicks, fresh off their NBA championship, are set to raise their banner on October 20, just over two weeks away, when they face the Philadelphia 76ers on opening night.

Towns, who will celebrate his 31st birthday on November 15, is eligible for a four-year extension worth $276 million. He is slated to earn $57 million this season and holds a $61.1 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. When asked at the beginning of training camp about how he would handle negotiations stretching into the season, Towns remarked, "In this situation, there's no comfortability to be had."

A six-time All-Star, Towns averaged close to 16 points and grabbed over 10 rebounds per game during the Knicks' first championship run since 1973. He feels he deserves a reward for his contributions to the title. "I want to do something that can keep the team together and work with the Knicks and also values me," Towns told reporters ahead of the Knicks' preseason opener in Philadelphia.

Key Analysis

Team owner James Dolan has previously stated that the franchise would not exceed the second spending apron, which could complicate extension talks. Additionally, center Mitchell Robinson departed New York after eight seasons, signing a three-year free-agent contract with Eastern Conference rival Boston. These factors may influence Towns' negotiations as the season approaches.
