Melvin Council Jr. has received a temporary injunction and will rejoin the Kansas Jayhawks for an unprecedented seventh season of college basketball. Head coach Bill Self announced that Council will start practicing with the team right away.
"Melvin was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season, and had a major impact on our program both on and off the court," Self said. "He brings a lot of experience and leadership to our roster, and we are excited to welcome him back."
The 24-year-old Council averaged 12.7 points and 5.1 assists while serving as Kansas's starting point guard last season. His collegiate journey has been extensive: two seasons at the junior college level, followed by one season each at Wagner, St. Bonaventure, and Kansas.
Key Analysis
Council's return provides Kansas with a seasoned veteran who has already proven himself in the Big 12. His leadership and experience will be invaluable for a team aiming for another deep postseason run. The injunction sets a notable precedent for player eligibility in college athletics.
