Kaleb Keipert takes over Greenville boys basketball program

New Greenville boys basketball head coach Kaleb Keipert speaks to players during a summer scrimmage match.

Keipert takes over the program from former coach Joel Visser, who led the Jackets to back-to-back River Cities Alliance (RCA) conference titles and 20-plus win seasons.

The Yellow Jackets enter the 2026-2027 season on the heels of consecutive River Cities Alliance (RCA) championships and back-to-back 20-plus win campaigns, accomplishments that rank among the most successful stretches in program history.

Rather than rebuilding, the Jackets find themselves in a position of trying to sustain excellence.

That responsibility now falls to first-year head coach Kaleb Keipert, following the exit of Joel Visser.

Taking over a program with championship expectations isnt an easy task, but its one he embraces as he looks to build upon the foundation already established while putting his own stamp on the Yellow Jacket program.

For Keipert, the opportunity to take over Greenvilles program was about more than stepping into a team with recent success.

Instead, it was about joining a community and a program with the foundation already in place to continue competing at a high level.

When I saw this opportunity, I couldnt think of anything better, he said.

This is a team with tradition, they work super hard and have kids that want to be in the gym and on the field.

Simply put, I dont think I could ask for anything more as a coach.

Originally from Roscommon, Keipert played football, basketball and baseball in high school before continuing his basketball journey at Mid Michigan College.

His coaching journey started after college as the head coach of the freshman and junior varsity teams at Shepherd High School for three years one year with the freshman team and two years with the junior varsity team.

Most recently, he was a varsity assistant coach at Clare High School for three seasons.

Outside of high school basketball, he has experience in coaching various levels of AAU basketball from the eighth grade all the way up to 17U.

This fall, Keipert will be a teacher for Greenville Public Schools.

I love being around the game of basketball, he said.

I love teaching young people not only about basketball as a game, but life itself.

Finding the right person to lead the Jackets boys basketball program was about more than simply replacing a coach.

Greenville Athletic Director Brian Zdanowski said Keiperts approach, experience and vision for the future of the program made him an ideal fit to take over the reins.

Anybodys coming in in a tough spot with the success weve had, but I think hes got the right ideas, he said.

Hes even-keeled and hes got the right mentality.

Hes not coming in to change everything because he saw what worked, but hes going to bring in his own twist of somethings and I think its going to be beneficial for us.

Unlike many coaches who inherit programs searching for a turnaround, Keipert steps into a situation where the expectations have already been elevated.

Rather than starting from scratch, Keiperts focus is on maintaining the standards that have been established while bringing his own approach to the program.

I dont think its about rewriting the script, he said.

I really want to understand the strengths that these kids have and that the school has and build off of that.

One of the biggest benefits Keipert inherits is a roster that has already experienced the pressure and preparation required to compete and win at a high level.

The Jackets back-to-back RCA conference titles provide a blueprint for what success looks like.

According to Keipert, that experience is something the program can lean on as it enters a new coaching era.

I think it gives the guys a lot of confidence, he said.

It gives them high expectations of themselves, which is great.

They have a goal to reach and Im here to help them with that and do everything I can to push them that way and get them to the best spot they can be in.

While Keipert respects what Greenville basketball has been the last few years, he also wants the program to reflect his own identity and that identity begins with the way the Jackets play on court.

Were going to play with some high energy, he said.

Theres going to be a lot of high effort, were going to be physical, and I would say relentless as well.

Whether were up 20 or down 20, I expect to see the same team playing and going at it.

For Keipert, success will not be measured solely by wins and losses.

It will also be measured by the type of program Greenville becomes.

Building a strong culture is one of his biggest priorities as he begins his tenure.

He hopes to create an environment where players hold each other accountable, embrace their roles and understand the significance of representing the program and the community.

I want to build a culture that keeps growing and that is fun to watch, he said.

I want to build one that Greenville can be proud of watching and supporting and one that even younger kids look forward to being a part of and getting to play for when theyre older.

While statistics can tell part of a players story, Keipert believes the most important qualities are often the ones that do not show up in a box score.

Good leadership and energy are key, he said.

You can only take yourself as far as the people youre bringing with you, so its a matter of how you can bring people with you and how you can raise them up and build others up as well.

As Keipert begins his first season at the helm, he knows there will be expectations surrounding the program, given their recent success and consistency in maintaining that success.

Still, his goals for his first season extend beyond simply adding another championship banner.

Im just excited to be in the gym with them and working on ourselves, building our team chemistry and kind of finding the best version of ourselves, he said.

Hopefully, we can kind of scratch that this summer.

Im here to work and Ill be present whenever possible.

I just want to be there for the kids and the community and be the best coach that I can be for them.
