Justin Jefferson Opens Up on Reduced Role as Vikings Remain Unbeaten

EAGAN, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson admitted on Wednesday that he is experiencing conflicting emotions as his individual numbers have declined while the franchise enjoys an unbeaten start to the 2025 season. The Vikings, at 6-0, are the NFL's lone remaining undefeated team, but Jefferson's personal output has been notably lower than in previous years.

Through Week 7, Jefferson is averaging just 60.4 receiving yards per game, a 32% drop from his next-lowest season-opening pace of 88 yards per game in 2025. His 23 receptions also represent his fewest through the first seven weeks of any campaign in his seven-year career. The receiver has been hampered by a sprained left ankle that forced him to miss one full game and most of another, and the Vikings have already had their bye week.

Jefferson pointed to those factors when explaining why he isn't overly frustrated or seeking intervention from team leadership. "I definitely would love winning games over having that production," he said. "There was definitely years before where I had that production and was not winning games. So it's definitely an in-between feeling on, you want to be the best player in the league, and you want to have that production to show you are the best player in the league, but we're winning games and we're the only team undefeated in the league."

He also noted that the team's success is the priority. "What we're doing right now [as a team] is working. Obviously there's things to do better and things to fix on the offensive side of things, but all in all, it's coming together and we're doing things to win games."

Jefferson's 31 targets this season rank behind 71 other NFL players, a stark contrast to his usual standing among the league's most targeted receivers. The Vikings are transitioning to new quarterback Kyler Murray, which has contributed to the adjusted distribution of the football.

Key Analysis

Jefferson's situation highlights the tension between individual achievement and team success in professional sports. While his numbers are down, the Vikings' perfect record suggests the offense is finding ways to win. However, as Minnesota enters the toughest stretch of its schedule—beginning this week at the Detroit Lions, followed by games against the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers—Jefferson's role could become more critical. His ability to balance personal goals with team objectives will be tested as the competition intensifies.
