Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Julian Lewis is on the mend after experiencing a medical emergency at the university's athletic facility that required him to be taken to a hospital, his father, T. Carlton Lewis, announced in a social media post on Thursday, Oct. 29.
In the statement, Carlton Lewis shared the news of his son's emergency and provided an update on his recovery. "Yesterday, Julian experienced a medical emergency at the University of Colorado athletic facility and was promptly transported to the hospital. He is recovering and thankful to his medical team, teammates, and Colorado fans for their prayers and support. Please respect Julian and the Lewis family's privacy. We will have no further comment at this time," the statement read.
On Wednesday, Colorado's availability report listed Lewis as "Doubtful" for the upcoming game against Kansas State.
Lewis, a four-star recruit who originally committed to USC and coach Lincoln Riley, started the first four games of the season for Colorado under coach Deion Sanders and new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. As the starter, he led the Buffaloes to victories over Georgia Tech and Weber State before a loss to Northwestern. In the Baylor game, Lewis started the first half but was replaced by Isaac Wilson at quarterback for the second half as Colorado trailed 10-3.
Over 3.5 games this season, Lewis has thrown for 733 yards, six touchdowns, and no interceptions. He has been sacked eight times and has a rushing total of -45 yards with one touchdown. He saw action in four games as a true freshman in 2025, but the Buffaloes opted to preserve his redshirt.
Key Analysis
Before the medical emergency, Sanders addressed questions about Lewis's status, including whether he would return this season. "That's on him. Great question, but that's on him," Sanders said on Tuesday. Sanders also pushed back on suggestions that he has treated Lewis unfairly, emphasizing that Isaac Wilson has taken over the offense since the second half of the Baylor game. "I don't treat people unfairly. I don't play games with young men and their careers or hate on folks. If anything, I'm too forgiving. You have to understand that we may know a little more than you do because we're inside the locker room and understand what happens, including what clicks and what doesn't. You guys on the outside think you see what goes on inside but you don't. And that's not a shot at any of you, but it's not for me to guess or assume," Sanders said.
Colorado will release availability reports on Thursday and Friday, as well as 90 minutes before kickoff against Kansas State. The Buffaloes are aiming to end a five-game losing streak when they host the Wildcats on Halloween. The game is scheduled for 12 p.m. MT on Saturday, Oct. 31.
