Joseph Woll's Strong Start in Philadelphia Has Maple Leafs Fans Wondering

Certain former Toronto Maple Leafs players fade from memory quickly, but Joseph Woll is not one of them. Perhaps that is because Woll was never just another goaltender passing through Toronto. There was always something distinctive about him.

He carried himself with a quiet, thoughtful demeanor. He played piano. He embarked on solitary hikes through the Alps simply for the experience. He spoke well and appeared genuinely curious about subjects beyond hockey. A bit of a loner, yet still remarkably personable. Toronto fans took notice, and many were unhappy to see him go.

But go he did, and now Woll is with the Philadelphia Flyers. So far, the early returns are encouraging. Woll has appeared in two games for the Flyers this season. Both contests required overtime. Both ended in losses. Yet Woll turned aside 78 of 84 shots, good for a .929 save percentage. Against New Jersey, he stopped 41 of 44. Against Carolina, he made 37 saves on 40 shots.

The issue is that the Flyers are providing scant support in the win column. Philadelphia sits at 0-2-2 to open the season, having scored just five goals in four games. Woll has held up his end of the bargain, but he is still waiting for the other half to fall into place.

Key Analysis

That situation, oddly enough, brings Toronto back to mind. Woll departed the Maple Leafs following a difficult 2025-26 season in which he compiled a 15-16-7 record with an .899 save percentage. Toronto's team defense was often in disarray, making it hard to properly evaluate his numbers. Now he has a fresh start, and perhaps that is exactly what he needed.

The Flyers acquired him in June with the expectation that he would share the crease with Dan Vladar. It was not a proclamation that Woll would be their franchise goaltender. It was an opportunity.

Woll has always been an intriguing hockey figure. He never fit the mold of the typical athlete who craves the spotlight. There was something a little different about him. Maybe that is why so many Toronto fans connected with him. People become attached to players for various reasons. Sometimes it is the goals. Sometimes it is the saves. And sometimes it is simply because they like the person.

To be clear, there is no argument here that the Maple Leafs should have retained Joseph Woll. Nor is there any suggestion that he will become Philadelphia's No. 1 goaltender. The point is merely that if you are a Toronto fan who has wondered what became of that thoughtful kid who tended goal for the Maple Leafs, it might be worth checking in. Woll is still there. He is just wearing a different jersey.
