Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal is expected to be out of action for one to two months because of a torn calf muscle, head coach Rod Brind'Amour revealed on Tuesday.
The injury occurred during pregame warmups on Sunday, just before the Hurricanes secured a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
So far this season, the 38-year-old forward has yet to record a point in six games.
Last season, Staal accumulated 36 points (20 goals, 16 assists) in 75 regular-season contests.
He also contributed 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in 19 playoff games, capturing the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP and helping the Hurricanes win their second Stanley Cup championship.
Over his career, Staal has registered 747 points (318 goals, 429 assists) in 1,409 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2006-12) and the Hurricanes.
He was originally chosen by the Penguins with the second overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft.
